John Mulholland, 1st Baron Dunleath
John Mulholland, 1st Baron Dunleath (16 December 1819 – 11 December 1895) was an Irish businessman and Conservative Member of Parliament. Early life Dunleath was born the son of Elizabeth MacDonnell (a daughter of Thomas MacDonnell of Belfast) and Lord Mayor of Belfast Andrew Mulholland of Ballywalter Park in County Down. Career He was involved in the Mulholland family cotton and linen industry and also represented Downpatrick in the British House of Commons from 1874 to 1885. In 1892, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Dunleath, of Ballywalter in the County of Down. Sailing "Aside from linen and politics, the 1st Lord Dunleath's other great interest was sailing." according to the Introduction to the Dunleith Papers held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. John Mulholland (born 20 November 1962) is an Irish journalist who was the editor of the British Sunday newspaper ''The Observer'' for 10 years and assistant editor of ''The Guardian''. He has worked for most of his career with the Guardian Media Group. In April 2018, he became the editor of ''Guardian US''. He left this post in 2022. Early life and education Mulholland was born in Ranelagh, Dublin, and has seven siblings. John Mulholland (1946 – 12 October 2022) was an Irish politician who was the Mayor of Galway from 1986 to 1987 and again from 1996 to 1997. Life and career Mulholland was born in Dublin in 1946, the eldest of six children of Ned Mulholland of Kinnegad and Betty O'Donoghue of Ballingary, County Tipperary. The family moved to Galway in 1948. In 1968 he married Margaret Flynn of Letterfrack, and moved to London where he worked in a betting office and as a fingerprint officer at Scotland Yard. He returned to Galway to take charge of the family's betting shop. He and Margaret have children Alan, Lisa, Eddie and Aoife Mulholland. Mulholland expanded the business, and by the early 21st century owned ten betting shops.
