John Monro (advocate)
John Monro, 5th of Auchinbowie (born 5 November 1725 – 24 May 1789) was a Scottish advocate. He was the eldest son of Dr. Alexander Monro (primus) of the distinguished Munro of Auchinbowie family. John received his early education at Mr Mundell's school in Edinburgh and was admitted an advocate on 24 July 1753 at the age of twenty-seven. He had a fair practice and on 21 January 1758 he was appointed Procurator Fiscal or Crown Prosecutor in the High Court of Admiralty on the nomination of the Judge, his brother-in-law James Philp. On several occasions in 1762 during the Judge's absence he filled his place on the bench. From 1760 to 1769 he was one of the group of advocates who reported and published the decisions of the Court of Session. John Monro (physician)
John Monro (16 November 1716 – 27 December 1791) was a physician specializing in the treatment of madness at Bethlem Hospital in London, better known as Bedlam. Family John Monro was the eldest son of James Monro, who was the physician of the Bethlem Hospital until his death in 1752, and his wife Elizabeth. James was the first of the Monro family of physicians who formed a dynasty of mad-doctors between 1728 and 1855. Monro had four sons with his wife, Elizabeth: John, Charles, James, and Thomas and a daughter Charlotte. Career John Monro graduated from St John's College, Oxford in 1737 and received a Radcliffe travelling fellowship that enabled him to study in Europe for 10 years, which included Edinburgh, Leiden, Paris and Rome. He was formally appointed as joint physician at Bethlem and Bridewell in 1751 to aid his ailing father, although he had been a governor since 1748, and as physician when his father died a year later. John Monro (surgeon)
John Monro of Bearcrofts (1670-1740) was a Scottish surgeon who was the progenitor of the Monro dynasty of anatomists in Edinburgh. He is credited with conceiving and playing a major role in founding the University of Edinburgh Medical School. He served as Deacon (President) of the Incorporation of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Medical education John Monro was the third son of Sir Alexander Monro (1629–1704) of Bearcrofts, commissary of Stirling. He was initially apprenticed on 8 April 1687, to the Edinburgh surgeon William Borthwick of Pilmuir (1641–89) who was the first in the Edinburgh Incorporation of Surgeons to have an international perspective, having studied in Padua in Italy and Leiden in Holland. Borthwick's Leiden education and his appointment in 1679 as Chirurgeon Major to the Army in Scotland, both influenced his young apprentice. Charles John Monro (5 April 1851 – 9 April 1933), sometimes also referred to as Charles Munro in accordance with his clan name, is credited with introducing rugby union to New Zealand. Early life Monro was born on 5 April 1851 in Waimea West, near Nelson, New Zealand. He was the fourth son of politician Sir David Monro and his wife Dinah. His father would later become the second Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives. His sister, Maria Georgiana Monro, would marry the Scottish geologist, naturalist, and surgeon James Hector. The Monro of Fyrish family were a Scottish family and branch of the ancient highland Clan Munro. The family produced a notable dynasty of doctors to London in the 18th and 19th century where they were involved in early work on curing 'insanity'. Four generations occupied successively the position of (Principal) Physician of the notorious Bethlem Hospital (Bedlam). They were also leading members of a variety of important medical associations.
