John Merrill (marathon Walker)
John Merrill, from London, England, is a leading marathon walker. He attended Westbourne School in Sheffield, Grosvenor House School in Harrogate, and Wennington School in Wetherby, Yorkshire, between 1955 and 1961. He is active in two areas: firstly undertaking extremely long walks, and secondly publishing books about walking, dealing with both his experiences and describing routes for readers to follow. In January 2003, he was made an Honorary Master of Derby University, for his walking and writing. He also lectures extensively about walking. By July 2020 he had walked more than and worn out 149 pairs of boots, over 1,500 pairs of socks and 49 rucksacks. He is a keen skier both downhill and cross country, a cyclist and qualified Qigong teacher. On 17 July 2010, Merrill was ordained as an independent multi-faith minister. John Merrill (Medal Of Honor)
John Mitchell Merrill (1846 – June 10, 1883) was an American soldier from New York City and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for service during the Indian Wars. Sergeant Merrill served in the 5th U.S. Cavalry, Company F. At Milk River, Colorado on September 29, 1879, his conduct was exemplary. He earned special commendation because, although painfully wounded, "he remained on duty and rendered gallant and valuable service." The Medal of Honor was officially presented in a ceremony on June 7, 1880. Merrill is buried in Olivet Catholic Cemetery, which is located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. John Merrill (American Politician)
John Harold Merrill (born November 12, 1963) is an American politician who served as the 53rd secretary of state of Alabama from 2015 to 2023. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 2010 to 2014. Merrill is a member of the Republican Party. Early life Merrill was born in Wedowee, Alabama, and raised in Heflin, Alabama. His father served as the Cleburne County circuit clerk and a probate judge. At the age of sixteen he received the Eagle Scout Award as a member of his local boy scouts troop. In 1982, he graduated from Cleburne County High School. Merrill double majored in history and politics at the University of Alabama and received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1987. Merrill interned for the United States Congress from May to July 1983, where he met representative William Flynt Nichols, who became his mentor. John Merrill (died 1734), of Lainston, Hampshire, was a British government official and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1721 and 1734. Merrill was probably the clerk in the pay office who became deputy to John Grubham Howe, the Paymaster-General, by 1710. He was chief clerk to William Pulteney when he was secretary at war from 1715 to 1717. Pulteney said of Merrill ‘He understood the ... revenues ... as well, perhaps better than any man in it … he was the truest friend’. Pulteney was probably instrumental in Merrill's unopposed return as Member of Parliament for Tregony at a by-election on 7 November 1721 in succession to Daniel Pulteney. Merrill was returned unopposed again at the 1722 general election.
