John McLaren (baseball)
John Lowell McLaren (born September 29, 1951) is an American former professional baseball coach and manager. He is best known for his brief tenure as manager of the Seattle Mariners, from July 1, to June 19, . A native of the Houston, Texas area, McLaren was a catcher in the Houston Astros minor league system from 1970 to 1976, and later managed in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system. He became a major league coach with the Blue Jays in 1986 and has since held major league coaching positions with the Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Washington Nationals. He also served as a coach for the United States national baseball team during the 2006 World Baseball Classic, spent two nonconsecutive seasons as a scout in the Devil Rays/Rays organization, and was interim manager of the Nationals for three games in 2011. John McLaren (cricketer)
John William McLaren (22 December 1886 – 17 November 1921) was an Australian cricketer who played in one Test in 1912. McLaren was born in Brisbane to William and Elizabeth McLaren. A fast bowler, he played first-class cricket for Queensland from 1906 to 1915. In 1907–08 he took five wickets against the touring English team, although Queensland lost by an innings. Three years later he took 5 for 55 and 3 for 75 against the touring South Africans. McLaren became the first Queensland-born player to play Test cricket for Australia when he was selected for the Fifth Test of the 1911–12 Ashes series. He toured England with the Australian team in 1912, but did not play in any of the Tests. John McLaren (horticulturist)
Dr John Hays McLaren (1846–1943) served as superintendent of the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA for 56 years. Born at Bannockburn, near Stirling in Scotland, and worked as a dairyman before studying horticulture at the Edinburgh Royal Botanical Gardens where he worked as an apprentice gardener's helper. He planted grasses anchoring the beach dunes along the Firth of Forth then emigrated to the United States in 1870 and worked on the George Howard estate in the San Mateo foothills, then on the Leland Stanford estate in Palo Alto and planted trees on the Coyote Point on the shore of the Bay. He was friends with John Muir, and dedicated his life to vigorous advocacy and development of the Golden Gate Park, one of the largest public parks in the world, using considerable political skill in addition to his remarkable gardening skill. Sir John Gilbert McLaren, (15 October 1871 – 27 July 1958) was a senior Australian public servant. He was a commissioner of the Public Service Board, Secretary of the Prime Minister's Department and served an appointment as official secretary, High Commissioner's Office in London. Life and career John McLaren was born in Parramatta, New South Wales, on 15 October 1871. He was educated at Sydney Boys High School. In 1901, McLaren joined the Commonwealth Public Service in the Postmaster-General's Department. Between 1921 and June 1928, McLaren was Secretary of the Department of Home and Territories. In June 1928, McLaren was promoted to the Public Service Board as second member. He departed his Board position in December 1928, to take on the role of Secretary of the Prime Minister's Department. John McLaren, Lord McLaren, FRSE (17 April 1831 – 6 April 1910) was a British Liberal politician and judge. In the scientific world he is remembered as a mathematician and astronomer. Life The son of Duncan McLaren, a former Provost of Edinburgh and Member of Parliament, and his wife Grant Aitken, he was born at 21 South St David Street, in Edinburgh's New Town. He studied law at Edinburgh University. He was admitted to the Scottish Faculty of Advocates in 1856. In 1869 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, his proposer being Robert William Thomson. He served as the society's vice president for three sessions: 1885 to 1891; 1892 to 1898; and 1901 to 1906. He held the office of Sheriff of Chancery in Scotland 1869–1880. He reorganised the Liberal party and arranged Gladstone's Midlothian campaign of 1879–1880. John Inglis McLaren (September 2, 1865 – December 8, 1948) was mayor of Hamilton, Ontario from 1909 to 1910. Biography John Inglis McLaren was born in Goderich, Canada West on September 2, 1865. He moved to Hamilton in 1879, and managed the Hamilton Coffee & Spice Company for 18 years. He married Bessie S. McClure in June 1892, and they had six children. John Francis McLaren (19 June 1919 – 23 March 1953) was a Royal Air Force officer. He was the younger son of Henry McLaren, 2nd Baron Aberconway and Christabel MacNaghten. Career Educated at Eton College, McLaren became an RAF squadron leader during World War II, first serving as a Mosquito pilot and later as a flight instructor. After the war, he became a barrister of the Inner Temple in 1946. He was made High Sheriff of Denbighshire in 1952, but died in 1953.
