John McGowan (Ontario Politician)
John McGowan (November 5, 1845 – October 20, 1922) was an Ontario businessman, farmer and political figure. He represented Wellington (Ontario provincial electoral district), Wellington North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1874 to 1879 and Wellington Centre in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal-Conservative member from 1901 to 1904. He was born in Greenock, Scotland in 1845 and came to Canada West with his parents in 1857. He settled in Peel Township, Ontario, Peel Township (now part of Mapleton, Ontario, Mapleton Township) and served as reeve there. He also managed a linseed oil mill in Elora, Ontario, Elora. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in an 1874 by-election and was reelected in 1875. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1900, and served for four years. Wellington Centre
Wellington Centre was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1904. It was located in the provinces and territories of Canada, province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867, which divided the County of Wellington, divided into North, South and Centre Ridings. The Centre Riding consisted of the Townships of Anson, Garrafraxa, Erin, Eramosa, Nichol, and Pilkington, and the Villages of Fergus and Elora. In 1872, it was defined to consist of the Townships of Pilkington, Elora, Nichol, Fergus, Garrafraxa West, Garrafraxa East, Peel and the Village of Orangeville. In 1882, the township Maryboro' was added to the riding. The electoral district was abolished in 1903 when it was redistributed between Dufferin (electoral district), Dufferin, Wellington North and Wellington South ridings. Elora, Ontario
Elora is a community in the township of Centre Wellington, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. It is well known for its 19th-century limestone architecture and the geographically significant Elora Gorge. Elora is no longer an independent entity. In 1999, the Township of Centre Wellington was formed by amalgamating the Town of Fergus; the Village of Elora; and the Townships of Nichol, Pilkington, West Garafraxa, and part of Eramosa. In 2011, the community referred to as Elora had a population of approximately 7,756.
