The Trumpet-Major
''The Trumpet-Major'' is a novel by Thomas Hardy published in 1880, and his only historical novel, and Hardy included it with his "romances and fantasies". It concerns the heroine, Anne Garland, being pursued by three suitors: John Loveday, the eponymous trumpet major in a British regiment, honest and loyal; his brother Bob, a flighty sailor; and Festus Derriman, the cowardly nephew of the local squire. Unusually for a Hardy novel, the ending is not entirely tragic; however, there remains an ominous element in the probable fate of one of the main characters. The novel is set in Weymouth during the Napoleonic wars; the town was then anxious about the possibility of invasion by Napoleon. Of the two brothers, John fights with Wellington in the Peninsular War, and Bob serves with Nelson at Trafalgar. John Loveday (antiquary)
John Loveday (1711–1789) was an English antiquarian. With the publication of his journals, he is now known for descriptions of English country houses. Life He was only son of Thomas Loveday of Caversham, then in Oxfordshire, and Feenes Manor, Berkshire, by Sarah, daughter of William Lethieullier, a Turkey merchant of Clapham, Surrey. After attending Reading school he matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford as a gentleman-commoner on 13 February 1728, and graduated B.A., in 1731, M.A. in 1734. As an undergraduate he developed a taste for archaeology. Loveday lived at Caversham, and with inherited money collected pictures, books, and antiquities. He purchased Dr. John Ward's manuscripts and coins, and founded a family library at Williamscote, near Banbury. He was well connected among the literati. Loveday died on 16 May 1789. John Loveday (rugby Union)
John Kelman Loveday (1 May 1949 – 20 May 2023) was a New Zealand rugby union player. A lock, Loveday represented Manawatu at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, on their 1978 tour of Britain and Ireland. He played seven matches on that tour, missing some of the early games because of back trouble. Loveday did not appear in any internationals. Loveday died in Taupō on 20 May 2023, at the age of 74.
