John Lindsay (South Australian Politician)
John Lindsay (c. 1821 – 15 May 1898) was a South Australian businessman and politician. History The son of house builder and architect David Lindsay (1780 - 1866) & Helen née Hastie (1784 - 1865), John born in Scotland Mar. 3rd. 1822. In Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland, he was baptised Mar. 24th. 1822. John received a good education in Scotland. At age 18 he moved to Liverpool, where he worked for the North and South Wales Bank then the shipping firm of Rankine, Gilmour, & Co. (Gilmour, Rankin, Strong, and Co.?) and prospered, but was inclined to travel, and sailed to America, where he worked for a few years before leaving for South Australia on the ''Rialto'', when he formed a friendship with George Main ( – 6 January 1905), whose brother owned the ship. Arthur Fydell Lindsay (c. 1816 – 10 May 1895) was a politician in the early days of the colony of South Australia. History Lindsay was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, and emigrated to South Australia on arriving in December 1836 in company with Governor Hindmarsh, James Hurtle Fisher (the Resident Commissioner), Osmond Gilles (Treasurer), and the Rev. C. B. Howard (Colonial Chaplain), and was present at the proclamation of the province under the historic gum tree at Glenelg. Lindsay was trained as a surveyor and worked in that profession for a number of years, notably laying out the town of Hindmarsh for the Governor (who with his wife personally owned the land) in a partnership with the Governor's son John as "Lindsay & Hindmarsh". Sir William Milne (17 May 1822 – 23 April 1895) was an Australian entrepreneur and politician, serving as the member for Onkaparinga in the South Australian House of Assembly from 1857 to 1868. He was elected to the South Australian Legislative Council in 1869, and was President of the South Australian Legislative Council from 25 July 1873 to 1881. Life Born in Wester-Common, near Glasgow, Milne was educated in Glasgow and emigrated to South Australia, arriving in the ''Palmyra'' at Port Adelaide on 29 October 1839, where he married Eliza Disher on 4 March 1842. Glenelg is a beach-side suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Downer, was a prominent South Australian businessman and a partner with his brother Sir John Downer in the legal firm G & J Downer. William John Peterswald was Commissioner of Police of the Colony of South Australia 1882–1896. Origins William John von Peterswald was born 28 November 1829 in Jamaica, West Indies, where his father, also named William, managed a large plantation, and received his early education at the Edinburgh Academy. Flinders is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It is named after explorer Matthew Flinders, who was responsible for charting most of the state's coastline. David Murray (28 December 1829 – 6 January 1907) was a politician in South Australia. Murray was born in Anstruther, Fife, Scotland, a son of William Murray. He and his brother William Mackintosh Murray (c. 1831 – 25 November 1920) had some experience in the retail and wholesale drapery trade, which included supplying retailers in the young colony of South Australia. In early 1853 the brothers arrived in Adelaide , and began operating a retail drapery store in King William Street, which became the wholesale draper D. & W.
