John Kingston (Australian Politician)
John Allan Kingston (born 7 July 1935) is an Australian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1998 to 2003, representing the electorate of Electoral district of Maryborough (Queensland), Maryborough. Kingston was born in Brisbane. He first came to state parliament one of the 11 One Nation (Australia), One Nation candidates elected at the 1998 Queensland state election, 1998 state election. However, Kingston broke with his party less than a year later and sat as an independent (politician), independent from February 1999. He was re-elected at the 2001 Queensland state election, 2001 state election before resigning midway through his term in March 2003 citing poor health. Prior to entering state politics, Kingston was a Maryborough, Queensland, Maryborough City councillor. He is married to wife Pahninh Silasack with whom he has three adopted children. 1998 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 13 June 1998 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The result of the election was a second consecutive hung parliament, with the Labor Party forming minority government after receiving the support of independent Peter Wellington. This election was the first in which One Nation supporters were elected to state Parliament, with the controversial party winning 11 seats. With nearly 23% of the vote, One Nation gained a higher percentage of the vote than any other third party (i.e. not Labor or Coalition) at the state or territory level since Federation. This was also the only election at which a third party gained more votes than both the Liberal Party and the National Party considered separately. Maryborough ( ) is a city and a suburb in the Fraser Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. At the 2021 Census, Maryborough had a population of 15,287. Geography Maryborough is located on the Mary River in Queensland, Australia, approximately north of the state capital, Brisbane. The city is served by the Bruce Highway. 2001 Queensland State Election
An election was held in the Australian state of Queensland on 17 February 2001 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The result of the election was the return of the Labor Party (ALP) government of Premier Peter Beattie, with an increased majority. Labor won 66 seats, easily the most it has ever won in Queensland and one of Labor's best-ever results nationwide. There was a 10.07% swing towards Labor, while One Nation suffered a 13.98% swing against it, losing eight seats (five of which were held by the newly formed City Country Alliance after an internal split in December 1999). The longstanding coalition between the Nationals and Liberals, led by Nationals leader (and former premier) Rob Borbidge recorded only a 2.39% swing against it. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent.
