John Kelly (Canadian Politician)
John Edmund Kelly (1852 – 1934) was a Canadian politician in Northwest Territories who served as a municipal councillor in Edmonton in the final decade before it became the capital of the newly created province of Alberta. Biography Kelly was born in Glengarry County, Canada West on July 2, 1852. He was trained as a marine and mechanical engineer. He settled in Fort Macleod, North-West Territories (NWT) in 1879, and subsequently built the first sawmill at Pincher Creek. Kelly came to Edmonton, NWT, in 1883. In 1892, he ran for election to Edmonton's first town council as an alderman. He was defeated, placing eleventh of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). He was successful in his second attempt, in 1895, and was re-elected in 1896, placing sixth of eight candidates. He did not seek re-election in December 1896, and stayed out of politics thereafter. Edmonton Town Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. James Ramsey (politician)
James "Merchant Prince" Ramsey (April 4, 1864 – December 23, 1939) was a provincial politician and business man from Alberta, Canada. Early life Ramsey was born in 1864 in Imlay City, Michigan. He was raised in Plattsville, Ontario. He began his career working as a merchandiser in his home town. He ended up traveling all over eastern North America eventually apprenticing under his father at his retail store in Guelph, Ontario. He moved west to Edmonton in 1910 and founded his own department store. Business career Ramsey founded and owned a popular department store in Edmonton titled ''James Ramsey Ltd.'' His store specialized in food, clothing, prescription drug and stationary. Ramsey remained in business until 1928 when he sold his store and merchandise to the T. Eaton Company. In 1929 Ramsey founded an investment company called Ramsey Hunt and Ramsey Limited. He retired a year later and moved to the Bahamas. Kelly Ramsey Building
The Kelly Ramsey Building was an historic building located in Downtown Edmonton at 10040 101A Avenue on Rice Howard Way. History James Ramsey was a department store owner who opened up a store in the Tegler Building (to the north of the Kelly Ramsey Building). Shortly after moving to Edmonton in 1911, he required more space and moved into the building which was built by a blacksmith John Kelly. Not long after Kelly's death Ramsey bought the building from his widow in 1926 for $100,000. He then extended the story westward calling it the Ramsey Building. In the 1940s the Government of Alberta bought the building. More recently, it had been owned by Worthington Properties. In March 2009 a fire broke out and gutted most of the building. Police determined it was caused by arson and on April 2 a man was arrested for the fire. 1895 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1895 Edmonton municipal election was held on January 14, 1895 in Edmonton, Alberta to elect the town council (consisting of a mayor and six aldermen, each elected for a one-year term) and four trustees for each of the public and separate school divisions. This was the first election in Edmonton history in which there was a contested race for mayor, and also the first during which school trustee elections were held concurrently with those for town council. Wilson, the successful mayoral candidate, was an opponent of Matthew McCauley and although he won against McDougall (McDougall was put up as a last-minute candidate by council members who supported McCauley, even though they expected Wilson to win), the majority of the elected town council were McCauley supporters. Glengarry County, Ontario
Glengarry County, an area covering , is a former county in the province of Ontario, Canada. It is historically known for its settlement of Scottish Highlanders. Glengarry County now consists of the modern-day townships of North Glengarry and South Glengarry and it borders the Saint Lawrence River. Glengarry was founded in 1784 by Scottish loyalists, mainly from Clan Donald, and other Highland Scottish emigrants from the Mohawk Valley in New York. The Crown granted them land and helped with supplies the first winter, as compensation for their losses in New York. Some veterans received land instead of pay for their salaries. In addition, the settlement was founded as a destination for Scottish emigrants arriving after the recent Highland Clearances.
