John Johnstone (mayor)
John Johnstone ( – 3 September 1732) was the 32nd Mayor of New York City from 1714 to 1719. Career An associate of George Scot of Pitlochie, he was a druggist from Edinburgh and emigrated to what has since become the United States in 1685 aboard the ''Henry and Francis''. Scot himself died on board ship. In New Jersey, he was known as Dr. Johnstone. In 1686, Johnstone was granted a tract of 500 acres by the East New Jersey Proprietors on account of his wife and another 30,000 acres in 1701. In spite of his investment in East New Jersey land, John Johnstone eventually settled in New York and was elected to the New York General Assembly, serving in 1709 and 1710. Between 1710 and 1714 Johnstone represented Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Perth Amboy in the New Jersey General Assembly. By 1714 he was mayor of New York City, in which office he served until 1716. John Young Johnstone (November12, 1887February13, 1930) was a Canadian Impressionist painter, known for his paintings of life in city, town or countryside, as well as for scenes of Montreal's Chinatown. Biography Johnstone is considered to be one of the more enigmatic of the Canadian Impressionist painters. With no contemporary texts about his life, myths and speculations have filled that void. Johnstone's training as an artist followed the path of other Montreal artists of his generation. In 1905–1910, he studied with William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal, then in Paris, France at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in 1911–1915 with Lucien Simon and Émile-René Ménard. John Johnstone (1881-1935) was a British businessman and rider. He was the tai-pan of the Jardine, Matheson & Co., member of the Shanghai Municipal Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He was the head of the Jardine, Matheson & Co. as well as director of numerous companies. He was member of the Shanghai Municipal Council and the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He was a keen rider and bore the reputation of being the best rider East of the Suez. He succeeded in winning the Jockey Cup on a pony named Ben-y-Gloe belonging to C. H. John Johnstone (1818–1884) was an architect who was responsible for the design of many public buildings in North East England in the mid 19th century. Career Born in Kilmarnock to a Dunfermline contractor, Johnstone trained as an architect before becoming clerk of works to the partnership of George Gilbert Scott and William Bonython Moffatt at Spring Gardens in London. He moved to Newcastle upon Tyne in the mid-19th century, where he went into partnership with William Alexander Knowles. John Henry Johnstone (1749–1828), also known as 'Jack' Johnstone or 'Irish' Johnstone, was an Irish actor, comedian and singer. Life Johnstone was born probably on 1 August 1749, in the horse-barracks in Kilkenny, where his father, a quartermaster in a dragoon regiment, was then quartered. He joined a cavalry regiment, and won some reputation among his comrades for his sweet tenor voice. John Johnstone (1768–1836) was a British physician and biographer. Life The sixth son of James Johnstone (1730?–1802) MD and his wife Hannah Crane, and brother of Edward Johnstone and James Johnstone (1753–1783), he was born in Kidderminster, where his father was practising. He studied at Kidderminster Free School and entered Merton College, Oxford, in 1786. He graduated BA in 1789, MA 1792, MB 1793, and MD 1800. Johnstone became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1805, and a fellow of the Royal Society in 1815. He delivered the Harveian Oration in 1819. He practised medicine in Worcester from 1793 to 1799, when he moved to Birmingham, where he built up a large practice. From 1801 to 1833 he was physician to Birmingham General Hospital. John William Johnstone (born November 25, 1968) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. Career Minor leagues Johnstone was chosen in the 20th round of the 1987 Major League Baseball draft by the New York Mets. He joined the Kingsport Mets in the rookie-level Appalachian League for the remainder of the season after his selection, and went 1-1 with a 7.45 ERA with a 2.14 WHIP over 17 games. Sir John Johnstone, 1st Baronet (died 30 September 1711) was a Scottish Army officer and politician. He was the oldest son of Sir James Johnstone of Westerhall, Dumfriesshire, a member of the pre-Union Parliament of Scotland. His mother Margaret was the daughter of John Bannatyne of Corehouse in Lanarkshire. He was the older brother of William Johnstone MP. In 1700 Johnstone became a Shire Commissioner for Dumfriesshire in succession to his father and was made a baronet. He supported the Court party in the hope of advancing his army career, and as circumstances changed he moved between patrons, including the rivals Annandale and Queensberry. Backing the Duke of Argyll after 1704, Johnstone consistently voted for the Union with England. In 1707, he became one of the 45 Scottish representatives to the first Parliament of Great Britain.
