John Jewell (Worcestershire Cricketer)
John Mark Herbert Jewell ( Bloemfontein, South Africa, 3 May 1917 – Durban, South Africa, 29 October 1946) was an English first-class cricketer played for Worcestershire in two matches in the 1939 season. A right-handed middle-order batsman, Jewell played in the first first-class match of the West Indies tour, scoring 4 and 24 and taking two catches as Worcestershire won the match inside two days. His only other first-class game was the Whitsuntide match against Essex at Chelmsford in the middle of which the Worcestershire opening batsman Charlie Bull was killed in a car crash and the wicketkeeper Syd Buller was severely injured. Worcestershire's two innings in the match both came after the tragedy, and were unsurprisingly unsuccessful; Jewell scored 2 and 0, and did not play first-class cricket again. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. Worcestershire ( , ; written abbreviation: Worcs) is a county in the West Midlands of England. The area that is now Worcestershire was absorbed into the unified Kingdom of England in 927, at which time it was constituted as a county (see History of Worcestershire). Over the centuries the county borders have been modified, but it was not until 1844 that substantial changes were made. Worcestershire was abolished as part of local government reforms in 1974, with its northern area becoming part of the West Midlands and the rest part of the county of Hereford and Worcester. Major Arthur North Jewell (15 April 1888 – 8 September 1922) was an English cricketer who played 29 first-class matches between 1910–11 and 1920, mostly for Worcestershire. Maurice Frederick Stewart Jewell, CBE (15 September 1885 – 28 May 1978) was a Chilean-born English first-class cricketer: a right-handed batsman and slow left arm bowler who played the bulk of his cricket for Worcestershire between the wars. Early life Jewell was born in Iquique, Chile, where his father was the British Vice Consul and a councilor of the local municipality in 1879, after the end of the War of the Pacific. The family returned to England, and Maurice was educated at Marlborough College and agricultural college. His first-class debut came in 1909 for Worcestershire against Oxford University in a 12-a-side match; he batted at number ten and scored 10 not out and 4. With the exception of one outing for Surrey's seconds two years later, his next appearance was not to be until 1913, when he played for HK Foster's XI: again against Oxford University, and again in a 12-a-side game. John Edmund Valentine Jewell (31 January 1891 - 17 April 1966) was a cricketer who played 27 times for Orange Free State (and once for PW Sherwell's XI) between 1910–11 and 1925–26. He also played a handful of times for Surrey's Second XI. In first-class cricket he scored 1,485 runs at 28.55, with a top score of 168 in 1920–21; and took 19 wickets at 32.26, with best innings figures of 5–56 achieved in 1922–23. Jewell was born in Bexley, Kent, but spent most of his life in South Africa and died at Knysna, Cape Province at the age of 75.
