John J. And Eva Reynier Porter Estate
The John J. and Eva Reynier Porter Estate, also known as Elm Pointe, is a house, with associated outbuildings, located at 01787 M-66 South in South Arm Township, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The estate is now a public park, and houses the East Jordan Portside Art and Historical Society Museum. History William P. Porter arrived in East Jordan, Michigan in 1879 to establish a sawmill. The company he founded, the East Jordan Lumber Company, eventually owned two sawmills, a shingle mill, and a maple flooring plant, and extensive timberland. William's son John J. Porter was born in 1885. He attended Oberlin College and the University of Michigan, after which he returned to the area and took over the East Jordan Lumber Company sales force. As the area's timber was depleted in the 1920s, the Porters envisioned a conversion to agriculture, and to that end helped establish the East Jordan Canning Company in 1927. South Arm Township is a civil township of Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. Communities *Dwight was a historic community within the township. It began with a rural post office that opened on May 28, 1866 with local storekeeper DeGrove Haight serving as the first postmaster. The post office operated until July 19, 1898. *Intermediate is a former settlement located along middle section of the south arm of Pine Lake (now Lake Charlevoix). A post office named Intermediate operated from March 2, 1874 until November 30, 1892. *Nelsonville is a former community that was settled in Emmet County as early as 1865 by the lumbering firm Nelson, Reddington & Company. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. East Jordan is a city in Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,239 at the 2020 census. The city is at the end of the south arm of Lake Charlevoix at the mouth of the Jordan River. The corporate headquarters of EJ, an international company formerly known as East Jordan Iron Works, is located in East Jordan. EJ was founded in East Jordan in 1883. Lake Charlevoix ( ) is a lake in Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the third largest inland lake in the state with a surface area of over 17,200 acres (70 km2) and 56 miles (90 km) of shoreline. The maximum depth in the main basin is 122 feet (37 m) and in the south arm, 58 feet (18 m).
