First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Surrey Club
The purpose of this list is to identify all historically significant English cricket clubs and teams which played in significant matches, some of which may have been given first-class status. It concentrates on those which are now defunct or not currently significant. The list, therefore, excludes County Championship clubs, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), touring teams and the main university clubs. Clubs in the Minor Counties Cricket Championship or in one of the ECB Premier Leagues are excluded unless they formerly played in important or first-class matches. Note that some clubs which folded were subsequently refounded as modern league clubs. Mitcham
Mitcham is an area within the London Borough of Merton in South London, England. It is centred southwest of Charing Cross. Originally a village in the county of Surrey, today it is mainly a residential suburb, and includes Mitcham Common. It has been a settlement throughout recorded history. Amenities include Mitcham Library and Mitcham Cricket Green. Nearby major districts are Croydon, Sutton, Streatham, Brixton and Merton. Mitcham, most broadly defined, had a population of 63,393 in 2011, formed from six wards including Pollards Hill. Location Mitcham is in the east of the London Borough of Merton. Mitcham is close to Thornton Heath, Streatham, Croydon, Sutton, and Tooting. The River Wandle bounds the town to the southwest. The original village lies in the west. Thomas Humphrey (cricketer)
Thomas Humphrey (16 January 1839 – 3 September 1878) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Surrey between 1862 and 1874. A right-hand batsman and a round arm right-armed slow bowler, he featured as an all-rounder for Surrey with four centuries and 116 wickets (though his batting was more significant than his bowling). He was a member of the Surrey side that was generally reckoned as Champion County for 1864. His best season with the bat was 1865, when he reached one thousand runs for the only time: 1223 at 29.82. After 1873, he played in only four more first-class matches: one final match for Surrey in 1874, two for the South against the North in 1875, and lastly for United South of England Eleven v United North of England Eleven in a match that began on 13 July 1876. William Humphrey (cricketer)
William Humphrey (15 September 1843 — 24 February 1918) was an English first-class cricketer. Humphrey was born at Mitcham in September 1843. In 1862, he was engaged at Southampton by Hampshire, where he remained for three seasons. In his second season, Hampshire County Cricket Club was founded. However, it was for his native Surrey that he made his debut in first-class cricket, against Sussex at The Oval in 1864; he made three further first-class appearances for Surrey in 1864, and later in that season he made four first-class appearances for Hampshire (playing two matches each against Middlesex and Sussex; the first match against Sussex was Hampshire County Cricket Club's inaugural first-class match). In eight first-class matches, Humphrey scored 99 runs at an average of 7.61; with the ball, he took 6 wickets with best figures of 3 for 61. Richard Humphrey (12 December 1848 – 24 February 1906) was an English first-class cricketer active 1870–81 who played for Surrey County Cricket Club, Surrey and numerous occasional teams as a right-handed batting (cricket), batsman. He was born in Mitcham as the youngest of four brothers who all played first-class cricket: John Humphrey (cricketer), John, Thomas Humphrey (cricketer), Thomas and William Humphrey (cricketer), William Humphrey being his elder brothers. He made 194 first-class appearances, including 145 for Surrey, scoring 5,614 run (cricket), runs with a highest score of 116not out, * against Kent County Cricket Club, Kent in 1871, his sole first-class century (cricket), century.
