John Hoskyns (policy Advisor)
Sir John Leigh Austin Hungerford Hoskyns (23 August 1927 – 20 October 2014) was best known as a Policy Advisor to Margaret Thatcher while head of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit from May 1979 and April 1982. Prior to this he acted as a policy adviser to her and the Shadow Cabinet from 1975–79, during which time he produced, together with Norman Strauss, a business executive from Unilever, the important "Stepping Stones" report of November 1977. Early life Hoskyns was born in Farnborough, Hampshire, the son of an army officer, Chandos Hoskyns. One grandfather, Benedict Hoskyns, was a Church of England clergyman, Dean of Christchurch and Archdeacon of Chichester. The other, Austin Taylor (1858–1955) was a Conservative, later Liberal, politician, who in 1906 changed his party allegiance from Conservative to Liberal over the issue of free trade, alongside Winston Churchill. Sir John Hoskyns, 2nd Baronet
Sir John Hoskyns, 2nd Baronet PRS (23 July 1634 – 12 September 1705) was an English baronet. He was one of the founders of the Royal Society and served as its president from 1682 to 1683. Between 1685 and 1687 he also represented Herefordshire in the House of Commons. Life He was the eldest son of Sir Bennet Hoskyns, 1st Baronet, of Harewood and Morehampton Park, Herefordshire, and grandson of Serjeant John Hoskins, born in Herefordshire on 23 July 1634. He was educated in the rudiments of Latin by his mother, Anne, daughter of Sir John Bingley of Temple Combe, Somerset, and was later sent to Westminster School under Richard Busby. Sir John married Jane, eldest daughter of Sir Gabriel Lowe of Newark, Gloucestershire by Ann Hungerford of South Marston. They lived at Harewood End, as did Jane continue in widowhood until 1724 when she died, and was buried in the church there. They left a large family. Hoskyns Baronets
The Hoskyns Baronetcy, of Harewood in the County of Hereford, is a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 18 December 1676 for Bennet Hoskyns, Member of Parliament for Wendover, Hereford and Herefordshire. He was the son of the poet, lawyer and politician John Hoskins. The second Baronet was one of the founders of the Royal Society and served as its president from 1682 to 1683. The fourth Baronet fought under the Duke of Marlborough in the War of the Spanish Succession and also represented Herefordshire in the House of Commons. The twelfth Baronet was Lord Bishop of Southwell from 1904 to 1925. Sir John Hoskyns, 15th Baronet
Sir John Chevallier Hoskyns, 15th Baronet (23 May 1926 – 12 April 1956) was an English first-class cricketer, British Army officer, barrister, and clergyman. The son of Sir Edwyn Hoskyns, he was born in May 1926 at Newnham, Cambridgeshire. He was educated at Marlborough College. Upon the death of his brother in April 1945, he succeeded him as the 15th Baronet of the Hoskyns baronets. He finished his education at Marlborough during the Second World War and was commissioned into the King's Royal Rifle Corps as a second lieutenant in September 1945, and was posted to Palestine and Kenya until 1948. After returning to England, Hoskyns matriculated to King's College, Cambridge. While studying at Cambridge, he played first-class cricket for Cambridge University Cricket Club in 1949, making two appearances against Sussex and Warwickshire.
