John Hills (social Scientist)
Sir John Robert Hills, (29 July 1954 – 21 December 2020) was a British academic, latterly professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics. He acted as director of the ESRC Research Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion from 1997. His work focused on inequality, and the role of social policy over the life course. Education John Hills was educated at Nottingham High School and Abingdon School. At Abingdon he was Head of Dayboys and won the St Catherine's prize for Intellectual Initiative, the Smith Chemistry prize and Ingham Physics Prize, in addition to English and Mathematics prizes. Before going to Cambridge he conducted research at Euratom. He studied at the University of Cambridge for his undergraduate degree, and at the University of Birmingham for his master's degree (MSocSc Economics, 1980). John Hills (footballer)
John David Hills (born 21 April 1978) is an English former footballer. He is assistant manager of Bamber Bridge. Playing career Early career – From Blackpool to Everton and back to Blackpool Hills started in the youth team at hometown club Blackpool. He was signed by Everton manager Joe Royle for £90,000 as a schoolboy from Blackpool in 1995, after he impressed in an FA Youth Cup match playing for the Blackpool youth team against their Everton counterparts. His only full appearance for ''the Toffees'' was at home to Chelsea on 11 May 1997. He had two loan spells at Swansea City, making eighteen appearances and scoring once, before returning to his hometown club for £60,000 in 1998, after an initial loan spell. In the 2000–01 season he was an integral part of the promotion team, playing 90 minutes as Blackpool defeated Leyton Orient 4–2 in the Third Division play-off Final. John Hills (politician)
Major John Waller Hills PC (1867 – 24 December 1938) was a British Liberal Unionist and Conservative politician and author. The second son of Herbert Augustus and Anna Hills of High Head Castle, Cumberland, Hills was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. In 1897 he married Stella Duckworth, step-daughter of Leslie Stephen. Three months into the marriage, Stella was taken ill with peritonitis, and died. Nevertheless, Hills retained a close connection with his wife's family after her death, including her half-sisters Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. Woolf professed to dislike him, comparing his appearance to that of "an excellent highly polished well seasoned brown boot." During World War I he served as a captain in the 4th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He was promoted to the rank of Major in October 1915 and Acting Lieutenant-Colonel of the 20th Battalion in July 1916. He was wounded in September 1916, and mentioned in dispatches. John Hills (priest)
John Hills, D.D. was a priest and academic in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Hills was born in Fulbourn and educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1583, M.A.in 1586 and B.D. in 1593. He became a Fellow at St Catherine's, eventually becoming its Master in 1607. He was Vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1616 to 1617. Hills was ordained on 20 May 1585. He became Rector of Fulbourn in 1591.
