John Harper (died 1742) was an English actor. He was known for comic parts. Life Harper originally performed at Bartholomew Fair and Southwark Fair; a performance for his benefit at William Bullock's booth in Birdcage Alley, consisting of ''The Jew of Venice'', songs and dances, and the drunken man by Harper, was announced in '' The Daily Courant'' of 24 September 1719. On 7 November 1719 at Lincoln's Inn Fields Harper was the original Montmorency in Charles Beckingham's ''Henry IV of France''. He remained at Lincoln's Inn Fields until 1721.Playing among other parts Dr. Caius in the '' Merry Wives of Windsor'', and Ajax in '' Troilus and Cressida''. On 27 October 1721 his name appears as Sir Epicure Mammon in '' The Alchemist'' at Drury Lane. Here he remained for eleven years, taking parts for a low comedian. John Ernest Harper
Vice-Admiral John Ernest Troyte Harper (29 May 1874 – 27 May 1949) was a British Royal Navy officer. Biography Harper was born in New Zealand and educated there at Christ's College. In 1888 he joined the Royal Navy, being promoted to Lieutenant in 1896. He served in the South African war from 1899 to 1900 and the Ogaden Somali expedition from 1900 to 1901. In March 1902 he was appointed to serve at the ''Aboukir'', deployed at the Mediterranean station. He was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1906, and was navigating commander of the Royal Yacht ''Victoria and Albert'' between 1911 and 1914. He became captain in 1913 and at the Naval Review of July 1914 served as master of the fleet. Corporal John William Harper VC (6 August 1916 – 29 September 1944) was a British Army soldier and an English recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. John Harper (29 May 1872 – 15 April 1912) was a Scottish Baptist pastor who died in the sinking of the RMS ''Titanic'' in the North Atlantic Ocean. Harper was born in the village of Houston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, in 1872. He personally embraced his parents' Christian faith at age 14 and began preaching at 18. He supported himself in early adulthood by doing manual labor in a mill until Baptist pastor E.A. Carter of Baptist Pioneer Mission in London heard of his preaching and placed him in ministry work in Govan, Scotland. In 1897, he became the first pastor of Paisley Road Baptist Church in Glasgow, Scotland. Under his care, the church quickly grew from 25 members to over 500 and soon moved to a new location on Plantation Street. In 1923, it moved into its present building on Craigiehall Street and was renamed Harper Memorial Baptist Church in his honor. John Joseph "J.J." Harper (December 30, 1951 – March 9, 1988) was a Canadian aboriginal leader from Wasagamack, Manitoba, who was shot and killed by Winnipeg police constable Constable Robert Cross on March 9, 1988. That event, along with the murder of Helen Betty Osborne, sparked the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry. During an altercation between Police and Harper, Cross shot and killed Harper. It was initially ruled an accident; however, a strong public outcry lead to the Native American Justice Inquiry. The inquiry eventually concluded that Cross had used excessive force in the fatal confrontation. Personal life Harper was a member of the Wasagamack First Nation. He was also executive director of the Island Lake Tribal Council and a leader in Manitoba's indigenous community. He and his wife Lois had three children together. John Harper (1809–1842) was an English architect. Life Harper was born at Dunkenhalgh Hall, near Blackburn, Lancashire, on 11 November 1809. He studied architecture under Benjamin and Philip Wyatt, and when with them prepared the designs for Apsley House, York House, and the Duke of York's Column. Harper went into practice as an architect at York. When travelling in Italy to studying art, he caught a malarial fever in Rome. While still in a weak state he went on to Naples, where he died on 18 October 1842. William Etty, David Roberts and Clarkson Stanfield were among his friends. Works Harper was employed by the Duke of Devonshire at Bolton Abbey, by Lord Londesborough, and others. John David Harper (May 3, 1930 - June 15, 2001) was a five-term member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from Bullitt County and the 1987 Republican nominee for governor of Kentucky. Harper agreed to run for governor after the expected choice of party leaders, Lexington attorney Larry Forgy, surprisingly dropped out of the race because of fundraising problems. Harper lost to Democrat Wallace G. Wilkinson in a record landslide. Wilkinson carried 115 of Kentucky's 120 counties and won 504,367 votes (64.9 percent) to Harper's 273,035 (35.1 percent). Of the five counties Harper carried, one was his home county of Bullitt, and another was Wilkinson's county of residence, Fayette. A son of David Harper and the former Frances Freeland, John Harper was a native of the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, Illinois.
