John Griffith (Baptist Minister)
John Griffith (1622?–1700) was an English General Baptist minister. Life Griffiths appears to have joined the Baptists about 1640, and founded about 1646 a London congregation in Dunning's Alley, Bishopsgate Street Without. It is probable that he practised medicine, as he was known as Dr. Griffith. After the Restoration of 1660, Griffith frequently got into trouble as a conventicle preacher; and persistently declined the oath of allegiance. His difficulty was that the terms of the oath bound him to obey laws not then in being, and future sovereigns who might be Roman Catholic. His first imprisonment was in Newgate Prison (1661) for 17 months. He was again committed on 18 April 1683, and is said to have spent fourteen years more or less in gaol. Griffith was apparently free from molestation after James II's declaration for liberty of conscience (11 April 1687). General Baptists are Baptists who hold the ''general'' or unlimited atonement view, the belief that Jesus Christ died for the entire world and not just for the chosen Election (Christianity), elect. Bishopsgate Street Without
Bishopsgate was one of the eastern gates in London's former defensive wall. The gate gave its name to the Bishopsgate Ward of the City of London. The ward is traditionally divided into ''Bishopsgate Within'', inside the line wall, and ''Bishopsgate Without'' beyond it. ''Bishopsgate Without'' is described as part of London's East End. The ancient boundaries of the City wards were reviewed in 1994 and 2013, so that the wards no longer correspond very closely to their historic extents. ''Bishopsgate Without'' gained a significant part of Shoreditch from the London Borough of Hackney, while nearly all of ''Bishopsgate Within'' was transferred to other wards. The Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland took place in 1660 when King Charles II returned from exile in continental Europe. Conventicle
A conventicle originally signified no more than an assembly, and was frequently used by ancient writers for a church. At a semantic level ''conventicle'' is only a good Latinized synonym of the Greek word church, and points to Jesus' promise in Matthew 18:20, "Where two or three are ''met together'' in my name." It came to be applied specifically to meetings of religious associations, particularly private and secret gatherings for worship. Later it became a term of deprecation or reproach, implying that those of whom it was used were in opposition to the ruling ecclesiastical authorities; for example, it was applied to a cabal of mutinous monks in a convent or monastery. Newgate Prison
Newgate Prison was a prison at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey Street just inside the City of London, England, originally at the site of Newgate, a gate in the Roman London Wall. Built in the 12th century and demolished in 1904, the prison was extended and rebuilt many times, and remained in use for over 700 years, from 1188 to 1902. For much of its history, a succession of criminal courtrooms were attached to the prison, commonly referred to as the "Old Bailey". Edmund Chillenden
Edmund Chillenden (fl. 1631–1678) was an English soldier, known as an agitator and theological writer. At different times he was a Leveller and a Fifth Monarchist. Life With 60 others, he was arrested at a religious meeting in London in January 1641 at the house of Richard Sturges. He was a prisoner of war in 1642 in Oxford Castle, and wrote a pamphlet on the terrible conditions of his confinement, against William Smith. He was an officer in the parliamentary New Model Army, in 1646 a Lieutenant and intelligence officer in Whalley's Regiment. Henry Danvers (Baptist)
Henry Danvers (8 July 1622 to before March 1687) was an English religious and political radical from Leicestershire. He sided with Parliament in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, serving on the Committee for Staffordshire from 1647 to 1652 and as Governor of Stafford from 1650 to 1652, during which time he became a General Baptist. He also contributed to the constitutional manifesto known as An Agreement of the People and was nominated as MP for Leicestershire in the short-lived Barebone's Parliament of 1653. Following the 1660 Stuart Restoration, he was associated with numerous plots to overthrow the regime and died in Utrecht in 1687. John Sturgion
John Sturgion (died 1665) was an English General Baptist preacher and pamphleteer. Life Sturgion was a member of Edmund Chillenden's church in 1653. At one time a private in Oliver Cromwell's lifeguards, on 27 August 1655 he was arrested as the author of a pamphlet against Cromwell, now Lord Protector. He was discharged from the lifeguards and for a time imprisoned. In 1656, Major-general William Goffe complained that Sturgion's preaching attracted large crowds at Reading, Berkshire. About July 1656, Sturgion and other Baptists sent an address to Charles II complaining of their sufferings under "that loathsome hypocrite" the Protector, and announcing their return to their allegiance to the king, begging him also to establish liberty of conscience and abolish tithes. Francis Bampfield
Francis Bampfield (circa 1615 - 16 February 1684) was an English Nonconformist preacher, and supporter of Saturday Sabbatarianism. Born into a family of Devon gentry, he began as a conservative supporter of the Church of England, but gradually became more radical. He was expelled from the church following the 1662 Act of Uniformity, and became a Nonconformist; he spent nine years in prison, where he preached, and established congregations of Seventh Day Baptists. After his release in 1672, he spent another 18 months in jail for preaching without an alliance, and moved to London in 1674, where he continued his activities. Arrested again in 1683, he refused on principle to swear the Oath of allegiance, and was sent to Newgate Prison, where he died of fever on 16 February 1684.
