John Graham (history Painter)
John Graham (fl. 1720–1775) was an English history painter. Biography Graham was an Englishman by birth. He went at an early age to Holland, and settled at the Hague, where he studied painting under Pieter Terwesten and Arnold Houbraken. His name appears in the lists of the Guild of St. Luke at the Hague from 1718 to 1742. He also visited Rome to study art there, and on his return visited Paris and London, though he made the Hague his home. He lived with his sister in a house, which he adorned with ceiling and other paintings from his own hand. In 1775, it appears that Graham and his sister removed to London, where he probably died at a very advanced age. John Graham, 6th Earl of Menteith ( – c. 1598), was a Scottish nobleman. A minor when he succeeded as Earl of Menteith, he was involved in several lawsuits. Biography While his birth year and age is unknown, John Graham was just a boy in 1578, when his father died. Despite a lack of discussion on the topic, there is some controversy among scholars and historians surrounding the facts and circumstances of this young Earl. John Graham was the child of William Graham, 5th Earl of Menteith, and Margaret Graham (''née'' Douglas). Approximately ten days before his death, William Graham allegedly wrote up a will which turned his son, John Graham, over to the care and charge of his brother-in-law George Buchanan. John Stephens Graham (August 4, 1905 – October 20, 1976) was a Washington, D.C., attorney and political appointee. He was an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, and commissioners for the Internal Revenue Service and Atomic Energy Commission. Early life and education Graham was born August 4, 1905, in Reading, Massachusetts, son of Joseph L. Graham, a R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company executive, and Margaret Nowell Graham, an artist. His older sister was Katherine G. Howard, an Eisenhower administration official. He was a cousin of Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone With the Wind. John Graham (1802 – November 3, 1851) was an American politician. He served as a member of the Ohio Senate, representing Stark County, from 1846 to 1848. John Graham (1774 – August 6, 1820) was an American politician and diplomat. He was born in Dumfries, Virginia, and graduated from Columbia University in 1790. He moved to Kentucky and served in the Kentucky legislature. From 1801 to 1803 he served as secretary and chargé d'affaires in the U.S. legation to Spain. Graham was chief clerk of the State Department from 1807 to 1817 and as such was acting United States Secretary of State for five days, from March 4 to March 9, 1817, at the start of the administration of President James Monroe. Along with Caesar Augustus Rodney and Theodorick Bland, Graham was selected by Monroe in 1817 as one of three commissioners for a special diplomatic mission to South America, the South American Commission of 1817-1818. He served as the U.S. Minister to Portugal at Rio de Janeiro from June 24, 1819, to June 13, 1820. He died in Washington, D.C., on August 6, 1820. John "Bunter" Graham (born ) is a long-standing prominent Ulster loyalist figure. Born in the Lower Shankill, Graham rose quickly through the ranks of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), joining other UVF leaders at a rally at Stormont in 1974 to celebrate the collapse of power sharing. He became a member of the UVF's "Brigade Staff" (Belfast leadership) and, allegedly, chief of staff in 1976. In the late 1970s, he was admitted to the Mater Hospital for a short stay. Although he was watched by bodyguards, the Provisional IRA decided to assassinate him, in what they termed "Operation Bunter". However, this was prevented by the police, acting on information received from an informant. In 1983, Joseph Bennett, a UVF commander, became an informant for the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). Sir John Alexander Noble Graham, 4th Baronet, (15 July 1926 – 11 December 2019) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to Iraq, Iran and NATO. Career Graham, born in Calcutta, British India, the only son of Sir Reginald Graham, 3rd Baronet, was at school at Eton College. He served in the Grenadier Guards from 1944 to 1947, receiving a commission as a second lieutenant on 27 July 1945, barely over a month before the end of the Second World War. Following his military service, he then went with a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge 1948–50. On leaving Cambridge he joined the Diplomatic Service and studied at the Middle East Centre for Arabic Studies before being posted to Bahrain in 1951, Kuwait in 1952 and Amman in 1953. John Graham (Irish Republican)
John S.S. Graham (1915 in Belfast, Ireland – 29 December 1997) was an important Irish Republican Army (IRA) activist in the 1940s. He was a member of a Protestant group (including George Gilmore and George Plant) who joined the IRA, and for a time in the 1940s they formed a company of the IRA in Belfast. He rose to become Belfast Commander and Northern Director of Intelligence. Graham was arrested in September 1942 and sentenced to 12 years in prison. While in HM Prison Crumlin Road he (and 21 other Irish Republicans) went on a "strip strike" asking for treatment as political prisoners. The strip strike began in mid June 1943 and was called off in early September. The strike attracted little attention due to war time censorship. Graham was jailed during the IRA "Border Campaign" of 1956-62. While in prison, he learned Irish, and started one of the first Irish language newspapers in Belfast (which is now discontinued).
