John F. Curry (New York Politician)
Major General John Francis Curry (April 22, 1886 – March 4, 1973) was the first national commander of the Civil Air Patrol, the United States Air Force Auxiliary. He was also a major general in the United States Army Air Corps. Biography Curry, a 1908 West Point graduate, had learned to fly in time to accompany General John J. Pershing's expedition to Mexico. Later, during World War I, he served as Chief of Staff of the Air Service of the Second Army in France, under Col. Frank P. Lahm. On October 26, 1918, while serving as an observer in a 135th Aero Squadron airplane, the DH-4 was shot down by the anti-aircraft fire; he and his pilot escaped capture. On November 3, 1918, while still serving as an observer, his plane-along with an aircraft of the 168th Aero Squadron-destroyed a German observation balloon. Fort Logan National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. Fort Logan, a former U.S. Army installation, was named after Union General John A. Logan, commander of US Volunteer forces during the American Civil War. It contains and has over 122,000 interments as of 2014. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. History Fort Logan itself was established on October 31, 1887, and was in continuous use until 1946 when most of the acreage except for the cemetery was turned over to the state of Colorado. The awards and decorations of Civil Air Patrol are "designed to recognize heroism, service, and program achievements" of members of Civil Air Patrol (CAP) of the United States of America. The CAP is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. These awards are made to improve the ''esprit de corps'' of members. These awards are all worn in the form of medals or ribbons and all are considered civilian decorations. Civil Air Patrol regulations allow them to only be worn and displayed on appropriate CAP uniforms. In order to be considered for one of these awards, an individual must be a member in good standing of Civil Air Patrol at the time of the act being recognized. The 135th Aero Squadron was a United States Army Air Service unit that fought on the Western Front during World War I. Frank Purdy Lahm (November 17, 1877 – July 7, 1963) was an American aviation pioneer, the "nation's first military aviator", and a general officer in the United States Army Air Corps and Army Air Forces. Lahm developed an interest in flying from his father, a balloonist, and received among the first civil qualification certificates issued. He met the Wright Brothers in 1907 and used his interest in powered flight to become the Army's first certified pilot in 1909,, Appendix 14 followed four years later by becoming its 14th rated Military Aviator.
