John Elliot (antiquary)
John Elliot (1725–1782) was an English lawyer and antiquary. Life Elliot was born in 1725 in the parish of St. John-sub-Castro, Lewes, the son of Obadiah Elliot, proprietor of a brewery. After learning his rudiments at Lewes Grammar School he was articled to an attorney, and eventually secured a good practice. Despite business, and a Methodist wife, he kept up an antiquarian correspondence. He was in touch with William Burrell and John Watson. To Watson he passed information for his Memoirs of the ''Ancient Earls of Warren and Surrey''. Elliot was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries 7 December 1780. He died suddenly in Southampton Row, Bloomsbury, 28 February 1782, aged 57.Gent. Mag. lii. 150; Probate Act Book, P. C. C, 1782 He had asked "to be buried in the vault in St. Michael's churchyard in Lewes with my father and mother". By his wife, Margaret Cook of Berwick-upon-Tweed, who survived him, he left no issue. John Elliot (Royal Navy Officer)
John Elliot (1732 – 20 September 1808) was a Scottish officer of the Royal Navy who served during the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. He rose to the rank of admiral, and served briefly as colonial governor of Newfoundland. Elliot was born into the gentry in Scotland, and entered the navy. Little is known about his early service, but he received a promotion to post-captain during the Seven Years' War, and commanded the 32-gun frigate with distinction, first capturing a small French frigate, and then taking command of a squadron of three ships and bringing to action the notorious privateer François Thurot, who had been raiding the coast of Ireland in 1760. After a short but bitter engagement, Thurot was killed and his ships captured. Elliot was widely hailed as a hero and he and his captains received several rewards. John Elliot MD (1747 – 22 July 1787) was a physician and scientist in eighteenth-century London who was the first person to conjecture that different parts of the retina respond to particular colours of light. John Elliot (brewer)
Lieutenant-Colonel John Elliot (1765 – 27 March 1829) was a porter brewer who was lieutenant-colonel of the Westminster Volunteer Cavalry. He was head of the Elliott and Co. brewery of Pimlico, and treasurer of Westminster Hospital. Life John Elliot was born to George Elliot and Margaret (Grant) Elliot. In 1804, he married Eliza Lettsom at St Margaret's, Westminster. Eliza was the youngest daughter of John Coakley Lettsom. Together they had fifteen children and Sir Henry Miers Elliot is one of them who went on to become Foreign Secretary to the Government of India. Among his other children to have served in India, George Elliot served in Bombay Cavalry, William served in Madras Civil Service while Charles Morgan F.R.S served as Major Madras Engineers. John Edmund Elliot (30 March 1788 – 4 April 1862) was a British Liberal politician. Background Elliot was the third son of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 1st Earl of Minto, and Anna Maria, daughter of Sir George Amyand, 1st Baronet. Sir John Elliot (6 May 1898 – 18 September 1988) was a British transport and railway manager. Born John Elliot Blumenfeld, he was the son of the ''Daily Mail'' news editor R. D. Blumenfeld (who later became managing editor of the ''Daily Express''.) He changed his surname to Elliot (his mother's surname) in March 1923 on the advice of Lord Beaverbrook. John Elliot (also known as Jack Elliot, John M. Elliot, John M. Elliott and Jack Elliott) (7 May 1914 – 3 January 1972) was an American songwriter, credited with having written more than 600 songs for motion pictures.''The Hour'' (5 January 1972), p. 6. Biography Elliot was born in Gowanda, New York, on 7 May 1914. He was educated at Bennett High School in Buffalo, New York and then worked as an entertainer in vaudeville, nightclubs, and on radio. In 1939, he also worked as a theatre reporter for the Chicago edition of ''Variety'' magazine. He began to write songs in 1940, moved to Hollywood in 1943, and became a member of ASCAP in 1945. Huzaifa Herbert Elliot (4 July 1918 – 14 August 1997) was a British novelist, screenwriter, director, and television producer active from 1954 until around 1993. Between 1954 and 1960, he scripted a succession of one-off television plays including ''War in the Air'' and ''A Man from the Sun''. The latter was a pioneering work aimed at a West Indian audience. In 1961 he joined with astronomer Fred Hoyle to write another ground-breaking TV science fiction serial '' A for Andromeda''. The success of ''A For Andromeda'' prompted a sequel, ''The Andromeda Breakthrough'', in 1962. Following ''Andromeda'', Elliot wrote more one-off plays for the BBC.
