John Edward Burke
John Edward Burke (8 January 1871 – 9 October 1947) was a shipowner in Queensland, Australia. History Burke was born in Brisbane, a son of Captain John Burke (1842 – 3 June 1919) He was partner with his father in the shipping firm of J. Burke & Son from around 1902 to around 1910, when the company started using the name "J. E. Burke and Son", then "J. E. Burke Ltd" from around November 1923, when they opened their new wharf at Beenleigh. He was mayor of South Brisbane in 1912. His company, J. E. Burke, Ltd, owned numerous small ships serving towns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape York Peninsula from Brisbane to Burketown (named for the possibly unrelated Robert O'Hara Burke). The City of South Brisbane was a local government area on the southern side of the Brisbane River, Queensland, Australia. It was established in 1888 and existed until 1925 when it was amalgamated into the City of Brisbane. Burketown is an isolated outback town and coastal locality in the Shire of Burke, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Burketown had a population of 238 people. It is located west of Cairns and west of Normanton on the Albert River and Savannah Way in the area known as the Gulf Savannah. Robert O'Hara Burke
Robert O'Hara Burke (6 May 1821c. 28 June 1861) was an Irish soldier and police officer who achieved fame as an Australian explorer. He was the leader of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition, which was the first expedition to cross Australia from south to north, finding a route across the continent from the settled areas of Victoria to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The expedition party was well equipped, but Burke was not experienced in bushcraft. A Royal Commission report conducted upon the failure of the expedition was a censure of Burke's judgement. Early years Burke was born in St Clerens, County Galway, Ireland in May 1821. SS Yongala
SS ''Yongala'' was a passenger and cargo ship that sank off Cape Bowling Green, Queensland, Australia on 23 March 1911. En route from Melbourne to Cairns she steamed into a cyclone and sank south of Townsville. All 122 aboard died, and traces of the ship were not found until days later, when cargo and wreckage began to wash ashore at Cape Bowling Green and at Cleveland Bay. It was believed that the hull of the ship had been ripped open by a submerged rock. The wreck, which has become a tourist attraction and dive site, was not found until 1958. Design and construction SS ''Yongala'' was a steel passenger and freight steamer built by Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne, England to special survey for the Adelaide Steamship Company, at a cost of £102,000. SS ''Douglas Mawson'' was an Australian coastal steamer that was lost in the Gulf of Carpentaria around 28 March 1923 along with 20 passengers and crew. History SS ''Douglas Mawson'' was built in 1914, a wooden-hulled vessel of length and speed . One of its first duties was weekly trips under Captain Donovan to Nambucca Heads, for which she was ideally suited, being of particularly light draught, so better able to negotiate the Nambucca River bar. In 1916 under Captain Chellow it was used by Blakiston and Co. to carry cement from Geelong to Tasmania It was taken over by John Burke and Son, for their Gulf trade, a poor choice of vessel according to one correspondent.
