John Doran (British Army Officer)
General Sir John Doran (2 October 1824 – 25 September 1903) was a British Army officer from an established Irish family with links to Irish nobility. He saw extensive service in India and the North West Frontier. He had originally taken a commission in one of the East India Company Regiments (the 24th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry) in 1842. In 1893, whilst serving as a senior officer (a lieutenant general) in India, Doran was knighted ( KCB). He was promoted full general on 1 April 1894. John Doran (11 March 1807 – 25 January 1878) was an English editor and miscellaneous writer of Irish parentage, wrote a number of works dealing with the lighter phases of manners, antiquities, and social history, often bearing punning titles, e.g., ''Table Traits with Something on Them'' (1854), and ''Knights and their Days''. He edited Horace Walpole's ''Journal of the Reign of George III.''. Among other posts, Doran was for a short time editor of '' The Athenaeum''. Life He was born in London on 11 March 1807. John Desmond Beauchamp Doran (6 April 1913 – 9 September 1946) was a British Army Intelligence Officer who started his career in intelligence in the Secret Intelligence Service. He spent most of his active service career in the Middle East during the Second World War and the troubles that followed in the British Mandatory Palestine. Doran's family were a long established military family with roots in County Wexford, Ireland. His father Walter Robert Butler Doran was a highly decorated British Army Officer, as were his uncles and grandfather. He is recorded as being an officer in the Secret Intelligence Service before transferring to the army. He was commissioned in the Intelligence Corps as a Lieutenant on 12 February 1943; his service number was 274197. John James Doran (July 6, 1864 – February 16, 1904) was a Boatswain's Mate, 2nd Class in the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War. Biography Born in Boston, Massachusetts, enlisted in the Navy February 8, 1884 and served continuously until his death while serving as chief master-at-arms in . He received the Medal of Honor for extraordinary bravery and coolness under heavy fire from the enemy while cutting the cables leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, May 11, 1898. Life and family Johnny Doran was born around 1908 in Rathnew, County Wicklow. His family were Travellers with a distinguished musical heritage; his father John Doran and brother Felix Doran were also pipers, and his great-grandfather was the celebrated Wexford piper John Cash. By his early twenties, Doran was working as an itinerant musician, travelling with his family from town to town in a horse-drawn caravan and playing for money at fairs, races and sporting events. His playing is said to have inspired the young Willie Clancy and Martin Talty to take up piping as a career.
