John Davis (British Army Officer)
Major-General Sir John Davis (27 April 1832 – 5 October 1901) was an Irish officer in the British Army who became General Officer Commanding the Southern District. Early life and education Davis was the son of John Davis, of the Park, Rathfarnham, County Dublin, and his wife, Martha. He was baptised at St Andrew's Catholic Church. He was educated at Cheltenham College. Military career Davis was commissioned as an ensign in the 35th (Royal Sussex) Regiment of Foot in 1852 and saw action during the Indian Rebellion in 1857. He was present at the First and Second Battles of El Teb in February 1884 and commanded the 2nd Brigade at the Battle of Tamai in March 1884 during the Mahdist War. He became Commander of the troops at Malta in 1884, Commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade at Malta in April 1886 and General Officer Commanding Dublin District in January 1888. Battle Of Tamai
The Battle of Tamai (or Tamanieh) took place on 13 March 1884 between a British force under Sir Gerald Graham and a Mahdist Sudanese army led by Osman Digna. Despite his earlier victory at El Teb, Graham realised that Osman Digna's force was far from broken and that he still enjoyed support among the local population. Accordingly, a second expedition departed from Suakin on 10 March in order to defeat the Mahdists definitively. The force was composed of the same units that had fought at El Teb: 4,500 men, with 22 guns and 6 machine guns. The Mahdists had roughly 10,000 men, most of them belonging to Osman Digna's Hadendoa tribe (known to British soldiers as " Fuzzy Wuzzies" for their unique hair). The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. General Sir Baker Creed Russell (11 January 1837 – 25 November 1911) was an Australian-born British Army officer who served with distinction in the Indian Mutiny, Anglo-Ashanti War, Anglo-Zulu War, Sekhukhune Wars, and Egyptian War Early life Baker Creed Russell was born in 1837 at Ravensworth, Maitland, New South Wales, Australia, the son of the Hon. William Russell, of the New South Wales Legislative Council, formerly a captain in the 73rd Regiment. Military career Russell entered the British Army in 1855 as a cornet of the Carabiniers. Promoted to lieutenant on 1 August 1856, he was present at Meerut during the Indian Mutiny and took part in the pursuit of the Tantya Tope. He was promoted to captain on 18 February 1859. Prince Arthur, Duke Of Connaught And Strathearn
Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (Arthur William Patrick Albert; 1 May 185016 January 1942), was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He served as Governor General of Canada, the tenth since Canadian Confederation and the only British prince to do so to date. Arthur was educated by private tutors before entering the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich at 16 years old. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the British Army, where he served for some 40 years, seeing service in various parts of the British Empire. During this time he was also created a royal duke, becoming Duke of Connaught and Strathearn as well as Earl of Sussex.
