John D. O'Bryant
John Donaldson O'Bryant (July 15, 1931 – July 3, 1992) was the first African American to be elected to the Boston School Committee, being elected in 1977. He spent most of his adult life working in the school systems, first as a school teacher and ending with work at Northeastern University until his death in 1992. O'Bryant was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He also served in the United States Army before he began his teaching career. The John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics & Science in Boston is named after him, as is the John D. O'Bryant Center for African American Studies at Northeastern University. Mel King
Melvin Herbert King (born 20 October 1928) is an American politician, community organizer, and educator, who holds the position of Senior Lecturer Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in their Department of Urban Studies and Planning. In 1973, King was elected as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives' 9th Suffolk district, a post he held until early 1983. King was the runner-up in the 1983 Boston mayoral election, against Raymond Flynn. King, a lifelong resident of South End neighborhood of Boston, has been active in creating community programs and institutions for low-income people in the city, and he is the founder and current director of the South End Technology Center. Boston Public Schools (BPS) is a school district serving the city of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It is the largest public school district in the state of Massachusetts. Leadership The district is led by a Superintendent, hired by the Boston School Committee, a seven-member school board appointed by the mayor after approval by a nominating committee of specified stakeholders.
