John Collins (Canadian Politician)
Doctor John Fitzgerald Collins (June 1, 1922 - April 23, 2016) was a physician and politician in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's South from 1975 to 1989 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. He was born in St. John's and was educated at Saint Bonaventure's College, Memorial University, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Toronto. From 1966 to 1969, Collins was head of the cardiology department for the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre. From 1974 to 1979, he was head of the neonatology department of the Grace General Hospital in St. John's. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) is a medical royal college in Scotland. It is one of three organisations that sets the specialty training standards for physicians in the United Kingdom. It was established by Royal charter in 1681. The college claims to have 12,000 fellows and members worldwide. History The RCPE was formed by a royal charter, granted in 1681, with Sir Robert Sibbald recognised as playing a key part in the negotiations. Three applications preceded this and had been unsuccessful. There were 21 original Fellows, eleven of whom were graduates or students of the University of Leiden. The Universities (Scotland) Act 1858 resulted in several items from the College's Charter becoming obsolete, and they obtained a further charter on 31 October 1861. Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practised in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
