John Cohen (Australian Politician)
John Jacob Cohen (20 December 1859 – 25 March 1939) was an Australian politician. He was born in Grafton to storekeeper Samuel Cohen and Rosetta Manser. He attended Ullamarra Public School and Grafton Grammar School and then Calder House in Redfern. He received a Bachelor of Arts with first-class honours in mathematics from the University of Sydney in 1879 and a Master of Arts in 1881. Having also studied architecture at night school, he moved to Mackay in Queensland in 1882 as a consulting engineer and architect, subsequently moving to Brisbane in 1884. He married Bertie Hollander on 12 March 1889; they had two sons. Cohen returned to Sydney in 1892 and was called to the bar in 1894. In 1898 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the National Federal member for Petersham, but by 1901 he was re-elected as a Liberal. John Cohen (born September 21, 1966) is the 16th athletic director for the Auburn University Tigers. He is former head baseball coach of Mississippi State University, where he also served as the athletic director from 2016 to 2022. He played college baseball at Mississippi State (1988–1990) after spending a single season at Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama (1986). He also played on the 1990 College World Series team his senior year at Mississippi State. He then spent two years in the Minnesota Twins farm system (1990–1991). He served as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri from 1992 to 97 before becoming head coach at Northwestern State University from 1998 to 2001, where he won two conference championships. John Cohen (August 2, 1932 – September 16, 2019) was an American musician, photographer and film maker who performed and documented the traditional music of the rural South and played a major role in the American folk music revival. In the 1950s and 60s, Cohen was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers, a New York-based string band. Cohen made several expeditions to Peru to film and record the traditional culture of the Q'ero, an indigenous people. Cohen was also a professor of visual arts at SUNY Purchase College for 25 years. Life and career Early life Cohen was born in Queens, New York, where his father, Israel, owned a shoe store. Thinker's Library
The Thinker's Library was a series of 140 small hardcover books published between 1929 and 1951 for the Rationalist Press Association by Watts & Co., London, a company founded by the brothers Charles and John Watts. The series was launched at the time when Watts & Co. was being run by Charles Albert Watts. A member of the company's board of directors, Archibald Robertson, took an active interest in setting up the series and it was he who suggested the series' name. The Thinker's Library consisted of a selection of essays, literature, and extracts from greater works by various classical and contemporary humanists and rationalists, continuing in the tradition of the Renaissance. Many of the titles were cheap reprints of classic books, aimed at a mass audience.
