John Cartwright (political Reformer)
John Cartwright (17 September 1740 – 23 September 1824) was an English naval officer, Nottinghamshire militia major and prominent campaigner for parliamentary reform. He subsequently became known as the Father of Reform. His younger brother Edmund Cartwright became famous as the inventor of the power loom. Early life He was born at Marnham in Nottinghamshire on 17 September 1740 to Anne and William Cartwright of Marnham Hall. He was the elder brother of Edmund Cartwright, inventor of the power loom and the younger brother of George Cartwright, trader and explorer of Labrador. He was educated at Newark-on-Trent grammar school and Heath Academy in Yorkshire, and at the age of eighteen entered the Royal Navy. John Cartwright (painter)
John Cartwright (; died 1811) was an English painter. Career John Cartwright was a member of the Free Society of Artists, and in 1763 signed the deed of enrolment of that society. He went to Rome to prosecute his artistic studies, and there became acquainted with Henry Fuseli. On his return to England he resided for several years at 100 St. Martin's Lane, and when Fuseli returned to England from Rome in 1779 he for some time shared part of Cartwright's house. Cartwright became a great personal friend of Fuseli, who gave him many hints, and occasionally assistance in his work. His historical pictures show much of Fuseli's influence. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1784 to 1808; his pictures were not confined to any one class of subject, but represented landscapes, historical and domestic subjects, and principally portraits.Cust 1887, p. 224. John Solomon Cartwright
John Solomon Cartwright, (September 17, 1804 – January 15, 1845) was a Canadian businessman, lawyer, judge, farmer and political figure in Kingston, Upper Canada. He was a supporter of the Family Compact, an oligarchic group which had dominated control of the government of Upper Canada through their influence with the British governors. He was also a member of the Compact Tory political group, first in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, and then in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. In spite of his relative youth when first elected in 1836, age 32, he was an influential member of the Compact Tory group in the Assembly. He was courted by two governors general to join the executive council of the Province of Canada, but declined each time, not willing to associate in government with the radical Reform members of the Assembly. John Robert Cartwright
John Robert Cartwright (March 23, 1895 – November 24, 1979) was the 12th Chief Justice of Canada. Born in Toronto, Cartwright was the son of James Strachan Cartwright and Jane Elizabeth Young. After graduating from Upper Canada College in 1912, he enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School and began his articles with Smith, Rae & Greer. He interrupted his studies in 1914 to serve overseas with the armed forces during the First World War. In 1915 he was wounded twice and for the following two years was an aide-de-camp to three successive generals. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. Upon his return to Canada, he resumed his study of law. He was called to the bar in 1920, then joined the firm of Smith, Rae & Greer in Toronto. In 1947 he was counsel for the Government of Canada in the prosecutions that resulted from the findings of the Royal Commission on Spying Activities in Canada, which had been chaired by justices Robert Taschereau and Roy Kellock. John Cameron Cartwright (born 29 November 1933) is a former politician in the United Kingdom. He was a Labour and then an SDP Member of Parliament (MP) representing Woolwich East then Woolwich from the October 1974 general election to the 1992 election. Early life Educated at Woking County Grammar School, he was the star of the school's Dramatic Society, for which he played numerous Shakespearean and Goldsmithian ladies. One such production was seen by the Norwegian ambassador, who was so impressed that he invited the whole production to perform in Oslo and Bergen. Political career Initially an Executive Officer in the Home Civil Service, Cartwright's political career began when he became a constituency agent for the Labour Party in 1955. John Cartwright (born 5 November 1940) is an English former professional footballer who played as an inside forward. He later became a coach. Career Born in Brixworth, Cartwright went to Parmiter's School in Bethnal Green. He was spotted by Wally St Pier while playing for East London and London Schoolboys and signed for West Ham United. He was part of the youth team that won the Southern Junior Floodlit Cup in 1956–57, and played in the 1958–59 FA Youth Cup Final, under the stewardship of Ted Fenton. He played in both legs of the Youth Cup final, which the Hammers lost 2–1 on aggregate. He had set up West Ham's first-leg goal, a long cross which Andy Smillie headed past Blackburn goalkeeper Barry Griffiths. Cartwright played in three youth international matches. John Cartwright (American Football)
John B. Cartwright (born May 5, 1946) is an American Baptist pastor who first achieved acclaim as a record-setting quarterback at the United States Naval Academy in the 1960s. After a tour of duty in Vietnam, he became head football coach at Lynchburg Baptist College (now called Liberty University) while attending seminary at the school in Virginia. He then left football to start a church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that he has pastored for over three decades. Playing career Cartwright followed Roger Staubach as starting quarterback for the United States Naval Academy as a sophomore in 1965. John Cartwright (lawyer)
John Cartwright (born 1957) is the Professor of the Law of Contract at the University of Oxford, a Student (Fellow) of Christ Church, and a qualified Solicitor. He sat Honour Moderations in Classics in 1978, but decided to become a lawyer and transferred courses, gaining a BA in Jurisprudence from the university in 1981. Afterwards, he read the BCL. Cartwright was appointed an Official Student of Christ Church after graduation and has been a Tutor of Law since 1982. In 2004 he was appointed Reader in the Law of Contract at the university. He has been Professor of the Law of Contract since 2008. Further, he has been Professor of Anglo-American Private Law at the University of Leiden since 2007 and is a visiting professor to the Panthéon-Assas University ('Panthéon-Assas').
