John Carroll Catholic High School (Birmingham, Alabama)
John Carroll Catholic High School is a co-educational private school in Birmingham, Alabama, United States and is one of six Catholic high schools serving the Roman Catholic Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama. Background One of the first projects envisioned by Archbishop Thomas J. Toolen, when he was assigned to the former Mobile-Birmingham Diocese in 1927, was the establishment of a Catholic high school in this area. However, John Carroll Catholic High School would still be a dream if it were not for the leadership and dedication of a Birmingham layman, Mr. John Carroll. Mr. Carroll, at a testimonial dinner for the Archbishop, began an organization - The Friends of Catholic Education - to raise funds for a Catholic high school in Birmingham. John Carroll High School, located in Fort Pierce, Florida, is a co-ed Catholic high school serving nearly 400 students in grades 9-12. History The school originally opened as part of St. Anastasia Catholic School and opened under the name John Carroll High School in 1965 as Diocesan regional high school. The school was named in honor of Pope John XXIII and Bishop Coleman Carroll. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Palm Beach. The school serves students from Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Okeechobee counties. It is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and holds membership in the National Catholic Education Association. The John Carroll School Inc., established in 1964 and incorporated in 1971, is a private Catholic school for grades 9–12. It is located in Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland, United States in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore. History In the early 1960s Lawrence Shehan decided to build an Archdiocesan Catholic high school on an site in Bel Air. The John Carroll School opened to 202 freshmen on September 9, 1964, under the leadership of Raymond Wanner. From its earliest days, the school was run both by clergy and lay people. The school is named after John Theodore Carroll, the first Catholic bishop and archbishop in the United States, serving as the ordinary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore.
