John Griffin Carlisle
John Griffin Carlisle (September 5, 1834July 31, 1910) was an American politician from the commonwealth of Kentucky and was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives seven times, first in 1876, and served as Speaker of the House, from 1883 to 1889. He subsequently served as a U.S. senator from Kentucky, from 1890 to 1893, and then as Secretary of the Treasury, from 1893 to 1897, during the Panic of 1893. As a Bourbon Democrat he was a leader of the conservative, pro-business wing of the party, along with President Grover Cleveland. Biography Carlisle was born in what is now Kenton County, Kentucky. He was well educated and took a post as a teacher in Covington, Kentucky. His father died in 1853 and he was left to support his family. He studied law under John W. John Carlisle (Australian Politician)
John Joseph Carlisle (c. 1863 – 18 June 1929) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mansfield to farmer William Carlisle and Anna Crockett. Following his father's death in 1871 the family moved to Yarrawonga, and Carlisle grew up to become a farmer in the area. He served on Yarrawonga Shire Council from 1895 to 1907 and was president from 1900 to 1901. In 1903 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Benalla and Yarrawonga, transferring to Benalla at the election the following year. A Liberal who joined the Economy faction of the Nationalist Party in 1917, he was a minister without portfolio from November 1917 to March 1918. In 1920 he joined the Victorian Farmers' Union, which became the Country Party. In 1926 he left the party after a dispute over a proposed redistribution, and stood at the 1927 election as an independent but was defeated. John Carlisle (6 September 1935 – 7 December 2011) was an English television and stage actor. Early life Carlisle was born in London and named John Roxburgh Clark. He decided in his early teens that he wanted to become an actor. He started acting in amateur productions until he was called up for National Service. Upon his release he worked odd jobs, determined to finance an acting course at RADA. Eventually he found himself with enough money, only to discover all his hard work had been unnecessary, for he had been entitled to a council grant all along. On completion of his training at RADA, Carlisle joined Harrogate Repertory and subsequently appeared in repertory all over the country, including at Ipswich, Birmingham and Liverpool. John Russell Carlisle (28 August 1942 – 18 February 2019) was a Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP) for the Luton West constituency and later Luton North constituency in Bedfordshire. Carlisle was Public Affairs Director of the UK Tobacco Manufacturers' Association from 1997 until 2001, even though he was a non-smoker. Early life The son of Andrew Russell and Edith Carlisle (maiden name Handley), he was born in Henlow, Bedfordshire and educated at Bedford School, and St. Lawrence College, Ramsgate.
