John Bury (translator)
John Bury (1535–1571) was an English translator. John Bury was the son of William Bury, a London draper. He is said to have been educated at Cambridge University. He translated from Greek into English the speech of Isocrates, ''Isocratis ad Demonicum oratio parenetica'' or ''Admonysion to Demonicus'', with a dedication to his uncle, Sir William Chester, 1557. John Bury (divine)
John Bury (1580–1667), was an English divine. Life Bury was the son of a descendant of the Devonshire family of Bury, long resident at Colyton, who was in business at Tiverton, was born there in 1580. On 9 February 1597 he was elected a scholar of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and in 1603, shortly after he had taken his degree of B.A., he became the first fellow of Balliol College under the bequest of Peter Blundell. After remaining for several years at the university he returned to his native county, where he obtained the vicarage of Heavitree and a canonry in Exeter Cathedral, his collation to the latter preferment dating 20 March 1637. A few years later he resigned his benefice in favour of a relation, and accepted the rectory of Widworthy in the same county. The latter preferment he retained until his death, and after the Restoration (2 March 1662) the rectory of St. Mary Major, Exeter, was conferred upon him. John Bury (captain)
Captain John Bury (28 July 1915 – 17 October 2006) was a master mariner and Elder Brother of Trinity House. He was involved in the adoption of a standardised buoyage system internationally. Bury was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. His parents were Welsh immigrants who had taken up farming on the Canadian prairie, but later returned to Wales. Bury took up a maritime career in 1931, becoming an apprentice on the Anchor Line. He joined the New Zealand Shipping Company in 1940 and served in the Merchant navy in World War II. He was promoted within the company to command its ships, before being elected to Trinity House. Mutually inconsistent buoyage systems had proliferated in the 19th and early 20th centuries, leading to many accidents at sea. John Bury (theatre Designer)
John Bury OBE (27 January 1925 - 12 November 2000) was a British set, costume and lighting designer who worked for theatres in London, the rest of the UK, and Broadway and international opera. John was educated at Hereford Cathedral School. After serving in the Royal Navy during World War II, Bury pursued a variety of jobs before joining the Theatre Workshop. After a period working for Theatre Workshop under the direction of Joan Littlewood at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London, in 1963 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, whose artistic director was then Peter Hall. In 1973 he followed Hall to the National Theatre Company, then still based at the Old Vic to become its Head of Design and an associate director. For Hall's Broadway production of ''Amadeus'' by Peter Shaffer, Bury was nominated for Tony Awards for scenery, costumes and lighting, and received the award for scenery and lighting.
