John Brooke, 1st Baron Cobham
John Brooke, 1st Baron Cobham (15 August 1575 - 1660) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England, House of Commons at various times between 1614 and 1643. He supported the Cavaliers, Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Brooke was the son of Henry Cobham (diplomat), Hon. Henry Brooke and his wife Anne Sutton, daughter of Sir Henry Sutton of Nottinghamshire; his father was the fifth son of George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham. In 1601 Brooke was in Paris learning French and in 1610 was journeying by sea and put into a port in Portugal. He was knighted in January 1612. In 1614, he was elected Member of Parliament for Gatton (UK Parliament constituency), Gatton. He was elected MP for Oxford (UK Parliament constituency), Oxford in 1621 and MP for Great Bedwyn (UK Parliament constituency), Great Bedwyn in 1625. John Mercer Brooke
John Mercer Brooke (December 18, 1826 – December 14, 1906) was an American sailor, engineer, scientist, and educator. He was instrumental in the creation of the Transatlantic Cable, and was a noted marine and military innovator. Early life and career John M. Brooke was born in Fort Brooke (modern-day Tampa), Florida. He was related to Congressman John Francis Mercer. His father was an army officer, General George Mercer Brooke, who died in San Antonio, Texas. He was a kinsman of General Dabney Herndon Maury as well as Virginia governor Robert Brooke. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. John Brooke (British Historian)
John Brooke (4 May 1920 – 1985) was a British historian. He studied history at the Victoria University of Manchester under Lewis Namier and, in 1951, became Namier's principal assistant for the ''History of Parliament''. When Namier died in 1960, Brooke succeeded him as editor of the section dealing with 1754 to 1790. From 1964, he was Senior Editor of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts. He was co-author with Namier of a biography of Charles Townshend, and author of ''The Chatham Administration'', a study of politics in the early years of George III's reign. He was also the author of a leading biography of King George III, published in 1972. Brooke died in 1985. John Weston Brooke
John Weston Brooke FRGS (2 July 1880 – 24 December 1908) was a British military officer and explorer. Career Brooke was born at Fenay Hall, near Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, the eldest son of John Arthur Brooke and Blanche Weston, and went to school at Repton. In 1898, he joined the Yorkshire Dragoons, a Yeomanry unit, and served with the Imperial Yeomanry in the Second Boer War. He was promoted to lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomanry on 10 March 1900. An act of gallantry in the field won him a commission as second lieutenant in the 7th Hussars of the regular British Army, on the recommendation of Field Marshal the Lord Roberts, the commission was dated 3 October 1900, and in November 1900 he returned to England and joined the unit at Aldershot.Fergusson, W.N. John Charles Brooke (27 August 1748 – 3 February 1794) was an English antiquarian who served as Somerset Herald from 1777 until his death. Early life Brooke was born at Fieldhead in the parish of Silkstone, Yorkshire in August 1748, the second son of Dr. William Brooke by his wife Alice Mawhood. He was a descendant of the Rev. John Brooke, Rector of High Hoyland, who had himself - in the previous century - been an antiquarian interested in the history of Yorkshire. John Charles Brooke eventually came into possession of some of the historical material collected by Rev. Brooke, and thus his "taste for historical and genealogical research" was "perhaps inherited." Brooke was sent by his parents to London to be apprenticed to James Kirkby, a chemist at Holborn. Sir John Brookes, 1st Baronet
Sir John Brookes, 1st Baronet, FRS (baptised 9 June 1636 – 18 November 1691) was an English MP for Boroughbridge. He was alternatively known as Sir John Brooke. He was baptised on 9 June 1636 at St Martin, Coney Street, York, the only son of James Brookes, a merchant of York who was Lord Mayor of York in 1651. John was educated at York School and Gray's Inn, London before entering Christ's College, Cambridge in 1652. In 1662 he was elected as an original Fellow of the Royal Society but subsequently expelled in 1685. He became a Justice of the Peace (JP) for York and later for the North Riding of Yorkshire. He was created a Baronet on 13 June 1676. In 1679 and again in 1681 he was elected Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire as a member of the militant Country Party faction.
