High Sheriff Of Buckinghamshire
The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, in common with other counties, was originally the King's representative on taxation upholding the law in Anglo-Saxons, Saxon times. The word Sheriff evolved from 'shire-reeve'. High Sheriff, Sheriff is the oldest Secularity, secular office under the Crown. Formerly the sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial. Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 the office previously known as Sheriff was retitled High Sheriff. The title of High Sheriff#United Kingdom, sheriff is therefore much older than the other Crown appointment, the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, which came about in 1535. John Borlase (1576–1648)
Sir John Borlase (1576–1648) was an English army officer and member of the Parliament of Ireland who was appointed joint Lord Justice of Ireland. Born in 1576 in Cornwall, the eldest son of Edward Borlase of London, a mercer, and Suzannah Isham. Borlase was educated at King's College, Cambridge, where he matriculated in 1591. He was knighted at Greenwich in 1606. Borlase served as a soldier in the Low Countries, taking part in the expedition to the Palatinate in 1620 under Sir Horace Vere to defend the Protestant cause. In 1633, he was appointed Master of the Ordnance in Ireland, jointly with Sir Thomas Lucas, a post he held until his death. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Enniskillen in 1634 and for Belturbet in 1639. Following the recall to England of Lord Deputy of Ireland, Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, Borlase and Sir William Parsons were appointed joint Lord Justices of Ireland in February 1641. Sir John Borlase, 1st Baronet
Sir John Borlase, 1st Baronet (21 August 1619 – 8 August 1672) of Bockmer, Medmenham, Buckinghamshire was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1640 and 1644. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Background Borlase was born at the Popham family seat of Littlecote House, Wiltshire, the eldest son of Sir William Borlase and his wife Amy Popham, daughter of Sir Francis Popham. William Borlase MP his younger brother. He was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, where he matriculated on 30 April 1635. He was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in the following year. Career In April 1640, Borlase was elected Member of Parliament for Great Marlow in the Short Parliament. His re-election as MP for Marlow to the Long Parliament in November 1640 was declared void after a dispute. Instead, Borlase was returned as MP for Corfe Castle in 1641. John Borlase (1650–1681), of Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, was an English politician. Early life Borlase was educated at Eton College, Eton and Magdalen Hall, Oxford. His father was the MP, William Borlase (died 1665), William Borlase. His mother was Joanna Bankes, daughter of Sir.John Bankes, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. Career He was a Member of Parliament, Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Great Marlow (UK Parliament constituency), Great Marlow in March 1679, October 1679 and 1681. During the Exclusion Crisis he was said to support Exclusion, and was marked by Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury as "honest", in the sense of reliable. However he obtained leave to retire to the country, and took no part in the Exclusion debates, nor does he seem to have played any further part in Parliamentary business. Sir John Borlase, 2nd Baronet
Sir John Borlase, 2nd Baronet (1640 – 1 February 1689) was an English politician. Born in Bockmer End in Buckinghamshire, he was the son of Sir John Borlase, 1st Baronet and Alice Bankes, daughter of Sir John Bankes, Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas and Mary Hawtrey. His nephew was Borlase Warren. John Borlase was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1658. In 1672, he succeeded his father as the 2nd baronet. A year later, he entered the English House of Commons as member of parliament (MP) for Wycombe, representing the constituency until 1681. From 1685 until his death in 1689, he was also returned for Great Marlow. Borlase died unmarried and was buried in Stratton Audley in Oxfordshire. With his death the baronetcy became extinct.
