John Balfour (Queensland Politician)
John Balfour (1820 – 21 March 1875) was a Station (Australian agriculture), Station owner and Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life John Balfour was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1820 to Melville Balfour and his wife Joanna (née Brunton) and was the uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson. He arrived in Queensland around 1846 and, along with his brother, became Lessees of Colinton Station, Moreton Bay Region, Moreton. From 1849 till 1862 he was Lessee of Cumkillenbar Station, Darling Downs, and Columba Station, Leichhardt. Politics Balfour was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council on 1 May 1860 and resigned his seat in 1864. Later life Retiring to his home in Cleveland, Queensland, Cleveland in 1865, he returned home to Scotland around 1872. Balfour died 21 March 1875. Cleveland, Queensland
Cleveland is a coastal and central locality in the City of Redland, Queensland, Australia. In the , Cleveland had a population of 14,801 people. Its location makes it a transport hub for islands in Moreton Bay. Geography Cleveland is located on the western shores of Moreton Bay approximately east-south-east of Brisbane, the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. It comprises commercial, residential and industrial areas and is the location of Redland City's Council Chambers, offices and various cultural facilities. Raby Bay was an area of mangroves and mudflats which has been developed as canal estates and a marina development. Darling Downs
The Darling Downs is a farming region on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in southern Queensland, Australia. The Downs are to the west of South East Queensland and are one of the major regions of Queensland. The name was generally applied to an area approximating to that of the Condamine River catchment upstream of Condamine township but is now applied to a wider region comprising the Southern Downs, Western Downs, Toowoomba and Goondiwindi local authority areas. The name Darling Downs was given in 1827 by Allan Cunningham, the first European explorer to reach the area and recognises the then Governor of New South Wales, Ralph Darling. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England.
