John Astley (courtier)
John Astley (ca. 1507 – 1595, Maidstone), also seen as Ashley, was an English courtier, Marian exile, and Master of the Jewel Office. He was a Member of Parliament on many occasions. Life He was connected to the Boleyn family through his mother Anne Wood, sister of Elizabeth Boleyn, Lady Boleyn who was married to James Boleyn. His father was Thomas Astley of Hilmorton, Anne being his second wife. He married in 1545 Katherine Champernowne, later known as Kat Ashley. At this point Katherine was governess to Princess Elizabeth. Astley in Elizabeth's household met Roger Ascham, who became a friend; he prompted Ascham's work ''A Report of Germany'' on the Emperor Charles V, and is mentioned as a dinner-party guest in the introductory section of ''The Scholemaster'' (1570). In 1554 he was in Padua. On the accession of Elizabeth he returned to England, and in December 1558 was appointed Master of the Jewel House and Treasurer of Her Majesty's jewels and plate. John Astley (Master Of The Revels)
Sir John Astley (or Ashley) (c.1569 – 26 January 1640) was an English courtier and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1614 and became Master of the Revels. Astley was the son of John Astley, Master of the Jewel House and his wife Margaret Grey, illegitimate daughter of Lord Thomas Grey.Cokayne, George Edward (ed.) Sir John Astley, 2nd Baronet
Sir John Astley, 2nd Baronet (baptized 24 January 1687 – 29 December 1771) was a British landowner and Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons for 44 years from 1727 to 1771. The son of Sir Richard Astley, 1st Baronet and Henrietta Borlase, he was baptised in Patshull in Staffordshire on 24 January 1687. Only one year later, he succeeded to his father's baronetcy and estate. In about 1730 he commissioned architect James Gibbs to build Patshull Hall, a substantial Georgian mansion house situated near Pattingham in Staffordshire. Astley was Member of Parliament (MP) for Shrewsbury from 1727 and 1734 and for Shropshire from 1734 to 1772. He died in 1771 aged 84. On 27 May 1711, he had married Mary Prynce, daughter of Francis Prynce of Shrewsbury, in Tibberton, Shropshire. They had a son, who predeceased his father, and four daughters. John Astley (painter)
John Astley (24 June 1724 – 14 November 1787) was an English portrait painter and amateur architect, known for his "patronage among a vast circle of fashion" as well as a fortune acquired through marriage. Early life Born in Wem, Shropshire, England, John Astley was a son of an apothecary, Richard Astley (1671–1754), and his wife, Margaret (1685–1735). Among his siblings was a brother Richard, also a physician, whose estate he inherited. Due to his good looks, he was known as ''Beau Astley''. Some period sources also call him ''Jack Astley''. A biographer of Sir Joshua Reynolds described Astley as "a gasconading spendthrift and a beau of the flashiest order." Several jaundiced contemporary accounts of Astley's character exist, notably a lengthy observation by John Williams, (aka Anthony Pasquin), who wrote: "He thought that every advantage in civil society was compounded in women and wine: and, acting up to this principal of bliss, he gave his body to Euphrosy ... John Astley (1735 – 28 May 1803) was a Church of England clergyman and pluralist, Rector of Thornage, Brinton, Bintree, and Foulsham in Norfolk. Early life A younger son of Sir Jacob Astley, 3rd Baronet (1692–1760), of Melton Constable Hall, Norfolk, Astley was born in 1735 at Hindolveston. His mother, Dame Lucy, was a daughter of Sir Nicholas L'Estrange, of Hunstanton. He was educated at Holt Grammar School, under John Holmes, and Bury Grammar School. At Easter 1752, aged seventeen, Astley was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge, where he held a scholarship for four years, until 1756. Sir John Dugdale Astley, 1st Baronet (27 June 1778 – 19 January 1842) was an English politician. He was Member of Parliament for Wiltshire from 1820 to 1832, and for North Wiltshire from 1832 to 1835. He was created a baronet, of Everleigh, in the county of Wiltshire on 15 August 1821. He was appointed High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1836. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Dugdale Astley, 3rd Baronet (19 February 1828 – 10 October 1894) was an English soldier and sportsman. Life He was the son of the 2nd Baronet (created 1821) Sir Francis Dugdale Astley and wife Emma Dorothea Lethbridge, and a descendant of Lord Astley. From 1848 to 1859, he was in the Scots Fusilier Guards, serving in the Crimean War and retiring as a Lieutenant-Colonel. On 22 May 1858, he married an heiress, Eleanor Blanche Mary Corbett, of Elsham Hall, North Lincolnshire. Eleanor (died 7 June 1897) was the daughter of Thomas George Corbett (died 5 July 1868) and wife (married 15 December 1837) Lady Mary Noel Beauclerk (28 December 1810 – 29 November 1850), daughter of the 8th Duke of St Albans. John J. Astley (born 13 January 1989) is an English professional snooker player from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Career Early career Astley first came into prominence in 2007 by winning the national Under-19 title (defeating Michael Georgiou in the final), however wins in the amateur PIOS tournaments proved hard to come by. His attempts to qualify for the main tour via Q School in 2011 and 2012 were unsuccessful as well. Nevertheless, Astley gained enough sponsorship to be able to enter all the PTC events in the 2012–13 season as an amateur. He reached the last 32 stage three times and finished fourth highest ranked amateur on the Order of Merit, winning a tour card for 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons. 2013/2014 Astley won his opening match of the season 5–2 against Mike Dunn to reach the main draw of the Wuxi Classic.
