John, Count Of Brienne
John, Count of Brienne (c. 1235 – c. 1260) was the eldest son of Walter IV of Brienne and Marie of Cyprus. He inherited the County of Brienne on his father's death in 1246, but preferred to live among his mother's relatives at the court of Cyprus, and played little part in international politics. In 1255, he married Marie, Lady of Thieusies (in Hainaut), the daughter of Sohier II of Enghien. Walter IV Of Brienne
Walter IV (french: Gauthier (1205–1246) was the count of Brienne from 1205 to 1246. Life Walter was the son of Walter III of Brienne and Elvira of Sicily. Around the time of his birth, his father lost his bid for the Sicilian throne and died in prison. His inheritance of the Principality of Taranto and the County of Lecce was confiscated. He took part in the War of the Keys in 1228–1229 in an effort to recover it. While a teenager, Walter was sent to Outremer where his uncle John of Brienne was the ruler of Jerusalem. In 1221 John gave him the County of Jaffa and Ascalon, and arranged a marriage with Maria (before March, 1215 – ca. 1252 or 1254), daughter of Hugh I of Cyprus, in 1233. Even after his uncle had been forced out of the kingdom by Frederick II, Walter remained one of the most important lords of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. County Of Hainaut
The County of Hainaut (french: Comté de Hainaut; nl, Graafschap Henegouwen; la, comitatus hanoniensis), sometimes spelled Hainault, was a territorial lordship within the medieval Holy Roman Empire that straddled what is now the border of Belgium and France. Its most important towns included Mons ( nl, Bergen), now in Belgium, and Valenciennes, now in France. The core of the county was named after the river Haine. It stretched southeast to include the ''Avesnois'' region and southwest to the Selle (Scheldt tributary). In the Middle Ages, it also gained control of part of the original ''pagus'' of Brabant to its north and the ''pagus'' of Oosterbant to the east, but they were not part of the old ''pagus'' of Hainaut. Hugh Of Brienne
Hugh, Count of Brienne and Lecce ( 1240 – 9 August 1296) was the second surviving son of Count Walter IV of Brienne and Marie de Lusignan of Cyprus. Life His father, Count of Jaffa and Ascalon in Palestine, was murdered in 1244 in Cairo, and was succeeded by his elder son, John. On the death of John (c. 1260), Hugh inherited the County of Brienne, in France, and the family's claims in southern Italy, including the Principality of Taranto and the County of Lecce, which had been confiscated in 1205. He claimed the regency of the Kingdom of Jerusalem (and, indirectly, a place in the succession) in 1264 as senior heir of Alice of Jerusalem and Hugh I of Cyprus, being the son of their eldest daughter, but was passed over by the ''Haute Cour'' in favor of his cousin Hugh of Antioch, and thereafter took little part in the affairs of Outremer.
