Johann Adolf of Schwarzenberg (20 September 1615, Wermelskirchen – 26 May 1683, Laxenburg) was the first Prince of Schwarzenberg. A diplomat in the service of the Habsburgs, he was a member of the prestigious House of Schwarzenberg. Biography Johann Adolf of Schwarzenberg was born on 20 September 1615 in Wermelskirchen, then part of the Holy Empire. He was the son of Adam, Count of Schwarzenberg and Margareta von Palant. A shrewd diplomat, he first served in Vienna, before entering the service of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, then Governor General of the Spanish Netherlands, of which he became chamberlain. He then lived in Brussels at the court of the Archduke. Johann Adolf was a very cultured and polyglot man, familiar with classical literature and a great patron of art. The House of Schwarzenberg is a German (Franconian) and Czech ( Bohemian) aristocratic family, and it was one of the most prominent European noble houses. Ferdinand Wilhelm Eusebius Prince of Schwarzenberg (Brussels, May 23, 1652 - October 22, 1703) was a German-Bohemian nobleman from the Schwarzenberg family. Biography Ferdinand was born the son of Count Johann Adolph von Schwarzenberg (raised to the rank of prince in 1670) and Maria Justina Countess von Starhemberg. Study trips took him to Besançon, Rome and Prague. Due to his father's good relationship with the imperial court, Ferdinand received the office of imperial chamberlain as early as 1668. In 1679 he acquired the nickname ''Pestkönig'' (''Plague King'') in Vienna, because he was responsible on the one hand for maintaining order during the outbreak of the Great Plague of Vienna, and on the other hand for organizing the care of the sick, contributing from his own financial resources. List Of Governors Of The Habsburg Netherlands
The governor ( nl, landvoogd) or governor-general () of the Habsburg Netherlands was a representative appointed by the Holy Roman emperor (1504-1556), the king of Spain (1556-1598, 1621-1706), and the archduke of Austria (1716-1794), to administer the Burgundian inheritance of the House of Habsburg in the Low Countries when the monarch was absent from the territory. The role of the governor-generals significantly changed over time: initially tutors and advisors of Emperor Charles V, who lived at the Palace of Coudenberg, they served as generals during the 80 Years War between the Kingdom of Spain and the Dutch Republic. Frequently, the governor-general was a close relative of the Austrian or Spanish monarchs, though at other times Spanish or German noblemen filled the role.
