Erin's Own GAA (Waterford)
Erin's Own GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Waterford City, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The club enters teams in both GAA codes each year, which includes two adult hurling teams and two adult Gaelic football team in the Waterford County Championships. The club has won the County Waterford Senior Hurling Championship, Senior Hurling Championship a total of 13 times making it the second most successful club in the county. The club has also achieved 8 championships in a row between 1927 and 1935. The current president is Billy Kelly. This is a lifelong position within the club once appointed. It is the oldest club in Waterford, Waterford City and is third on the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship roll of honour (13 - including one 9 in-a-row). The County Board is also responsible for the Waterford county teams. The county board's offices are based at Walsh Park in the city of Waterford. The Waterford County Board was founded in 1886. Hurling is the dominant sport, with the county having won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) on two occasions: in 1948 and 1959. While football is the secondary sport in the county, it is widely played nonetheless. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. His first glimpse of Croke Park was when he played in the 1957 All-Ireland final against Kilkenny. A teak-hard corner forward he also had plenty of skill and an unerring eye for the goal. Mick Flannelly
Michael Peter Flannelly (21 February 1930 – 11 September 2021) was an Irish hurler. At club level he played with Mount Sion and was also a member of the Waterford senior hurling team. Flannelly usually lined out as a forward. Career Flannelly first came to hurling prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Mount Sion club. An undefeated tenure with the club's minor team yielded three successive championship titles before being drafted onto the Mount Sion senior team. Flannelly's senior club career lasted nearly 20 years, during which time he won a record 15 County Championship titles from 18 appearances in finals. His success at underage level with the club brought him to the attention of the inter-county selectors, and he captained the Waterford minor team to the All-Ireland Minor Championship title in 1948.
