Joe Bailey (wrestler)
Joe Bailey (c. 1886 - 28 January 1951) was an Australian professional wrestler most notable for losing to Billy Meeske in a match to determine the Australian Heavyweight Championship in 1922. He was also an all-round sportsman competing in football, amateur wrestling, and competitive cycling. Biography Bailey was an amateur wrestler before taking up professional wrestling, beginning his career by asking to be trained at Fred Porter's gymnasium and impressing with his ability to lift weights. He was a respected heavyweight as of 1913, and was Australian amateur heavyweight champion by 1914. He continued wrestling during the First World War, beating a J. McKenna in a bout at the Railway Institute in Melbourne in 1917. In 1918 he helped organize an Athletics Programme in Melbourne as part of a Police Charity Carnival. Billy Meeske
Billy Meeske (b. 1891-deceased) was an Australian professional wrestler who was three-time Australian Heavyweight Champion and one time Pacific Coast Light Heavyweight Champion. He was an active professional wrestler from 1922 to 1938, and he was credited as being a major influence in re-establishing professional wrestling in Australia following the First World War. During his professional wrestling career he also performed as part of vaudeville acts demonstrating feats of strength, such as supporting the weight of five men, feats of agility, and Russian dancing. While he achieved his greatest fame in professional wrestling he was also an all-round sportsman competing in many sports at the amateur and professional levels, and served in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War with the rank of Sergeant. Clarence Weber
Clarence Alfred Weber (27 March 1882 – 20 November 1930) was an Australian athlete, wrestler and physical culturalist. Career Weber opened a health and strength college in Flinders Street, Melbourne with partner John Rice. He took up wrestling in 1904, defeating Buttan Singh for the Australian Heavyweight Championship in November 1906. He won the Australian title again in September 1911, and retired in 1913. His return to wrestling in 1923 was less successful. In 1925, Ike Robin defeated Clarence Weber in a Best 2 out of 3 Falls match for the NWA Australasian Heavyweight Championship in Melbourne. Upon returning to Napier, he was apparently awarded a gold medal in recognition of his victory. Theodore Thye (August 26, 1890 – March 22, 1966) was an American wrestler, promotor and manager in the United States. Professional wrestling career During his career he worked with Emile Czaja and Ed "Strangler" Lewis. Thye was a multiple time winner of the World Light Heavyweight Championship. He was also the World Light Heavyweight Championship (Australian version) by defeating Clarence Eklund. He also won the Pacific Coast Middleweight Championship in 1920 and the Pacific Coast Light Heavyweight Championship in 1922. He defeated Billy Meeske in 1924. Samuel Burmister
Samuel (Sam) Burmister(1897-1962) was a professional wrestler from Estonia who represented the Russian Empire in the 1912 Olympic games as a lightweight. He was also a trainer of wrestlers, and performed in vaudeville and sideshows as a strongman. Early life Burmister was born in Estonia in 1897 to a Jewish family. He participated in the 1912 Olympics for Russia. He served as a pilot in the Imperial Russian Air Force in World War I. As the situation in Russia worsened for Jews after the war, Burmister left Russia on a world tour across Asia and the Pacific and America. His tour took him to Australia in 1925, and found the local wrestling scene so receptive that he decided to return permanently. Burmister emigrated to Brisbane in 1937. Wrestling career Burmister had an active career in professional wrestling from 1925 to 1934, including winning the 1929 Australian Heavyweight title.
