Joe (1924 Film)
''Joe'' is a 1924 Australian silent film comedy directed by Beaumont Smith based on the stories of Henry Lawson about the character Joe Wilson. It is believed to be a lost film. Plot Mary Brand (Constance Graham), the young housekeeper at old Black's station, becomes the wife of Joe Wilson (Arthur Tauchert), the painter. The couple take up farming, but Joe leaves on a business visit to Sydney, and becomes entangled in the affairs of his sister-in-law Barbara ( Marie Lorraine), who has been instrumental in the destruction of a dress belonging to her employers. Joe pays for the dress and takes Barbara back to the bush. Barbara reconciles with Harry Black, old Black's son, who has lately ended an unhappy marriage. Barbara and Harry fall in love. Action sequences include a bushfire and a ball in the city. Beaumont Smith
Frank Beaumont "Beau" Smith (15 August 1885 – 2 January 1950), was an Australian film director, producer and exhibitor, best known for making low-budget comedies. Smith made his first film in 1917, '' Our Friends, the Hayseeds''. He went on to become one of the most prolific and popular Australian filmmakers of the silent era. Among his films were adaptations of the works of Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson. His 1933 comedy '' The Hayseeds'' featured the first screen appearance of Cecil Kellaway. Smith was famous for making his films quickly – sometimes he would complete shooting and post production within one month for budgets ranging from £600 to £1,200. His wife Elsie would comment on his scripts and his brother Gordon looked after company finances. ''The Sunday Times'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia from 1885 to 1930. History ''The Sunday Times'' was founded by W. H. Leighton Bailey. It was first published on 15 November 1885 by Charles Mark Curtiss, and ceased with no. 2389 on 1 June 1930. ''The Sunday Times'' was controlled by the Evans family for over 30 years, until 1916 when the Sunday Times Newspaper Company, as well as the company's premises, were sold to Hugh D. McIntosh. In 1927, McIntosh sold his holdings in the Sunday Times Newspaper Company to Beckett's Newspapers, with J. H. C. Sleeman as Managing Director. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. For this list of lost films, a lost film is defined as one of which no part of a print is known to have survived. For films in which any portion of the footage remains (including trailers), see List of incomplete or partially lost films. Reasons for loss Films may go missing for a number of reasons. One major contributing factor is the common use of nitrate film until the early 1950s. This type of film is highly flammable, and there have been several devastating fires, such as the Universal Pictures fire in 1924, the 1937 Fox vault fire and the 1965 MGM vault fire. Black-and-white film prints judged to be otherwise worthless were sometimes incinerated to salvage the meager scrap value of the silver image particles in their emulsions.
