Jimmy Smith (footballer, Born 1947)
James Smith (born 20 January 1947 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former footballer. Smith played for Aberdeen, Washington Whips, Newcastle United and Celtic. He also appeared in four international matches for Scotland, between 1968 and 1974. Aberdeen During his career he played initially for Aberdeen where he was popularly known as "Jinky". He won a Scottish Cup runners up medal in 1967, as Aberdeen lost to Celtic in the final. Aberdeen represented Washington Whips in summer 1967 in the United Soccer Association's inaugural season. In the final, which Washington lost 6-5 to Los Angeles Wolves, Smith was sent off after 30 minutes. His younger brother Joe also played for Aberdeen, winning a Scottish League Cup winners' medal in November 1976 when Aberdeen beat Celtic 2–0 in the final. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. 1972–73 Football League
The 1972–73 season was the 74th completed season of The Football League. Liverpool championship win meant they claimed their first trophy since 1966 in Bill Shankly's penultimate season as manager despite competition from Arsenal, Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Manchester United sacked manager Frank O'Farrell after 18 months in charge. He had been unable to mount a title challenge. Tommy Docherty, the 44-year-old Scottish national coach and former Aston Villa manager, was appointed as his successor. 1970–71 Football League
The 1970–71 season was the 72nd completed season of The Football League. Arsenal won the league championship at the home of their North London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, with Ray Kennedy scoring the winner. This would soon be followed by their FA Cup final tie with Liverpool. They narrowly overcame Leeds to win the league, with a 12-point gap separating Leeds United from third-placed Tottenham. Wolves and Liverpool joined these two teams in the UEFA Cup. Chelsea missed out on the top five on goal average but compensated for this shortcoming by beating Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Burnley and Blackpool (who won this year's Anglo-Italian Cup) were relegated to the Second Division. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season. The 1969–70 season was the 71st completed season of The Football League. Everton won their seventh league title, finishing nine points clear of Leeds United with Chelsea in third and newly promoted Derby County in fourth. Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland were both relegated. In the Second Division Huddersfield Town claimed the divisional title and were promoted along with runners-up Blackpool. Aston Villa endured the worst season in their history and were relegated to the Third Division for the first time, along with bottom club Preston North End, for whom it was also a first relegation to the third tier. In the Third Division Orient won the title and were promoted along with Luton Town, who had finished third the previous season. 1967 Washington Whips Season
The 1967 Washington Whips season was the club's first season of existence, participating in the United Soccer Association (USA), which, at the time, was the top division of American soccer. The Whips were an imported team of Aberdeen F.C. of Scotland. They won the USA's Eastern Division and played the Los Angeles Wolves for the title. A coin toss placed the game in Los Angeles, where the Whips, after playing with 10 players for the last 30 minutes, lost on an own goal scored in extra time by Ally Shewan. Scottish Division One
The Scottish Football League (SFL) was a league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border.
