Jimmy Smith (1900s Infielder)
James H. Smith (February 1874 – December 24, 1960) was an Infielder in the Negro leagues. Smith played for the Chicago Columbia Giants at the age of 28, eventually moving on to the Cuban X-Giants in 1904. He played there for two seasons, then moved on to the Leland Giants for a few seasons. He then appears to have wrapped up his professional baseball career with the St. Paul Colored Gophers in 1909. Smith also wrote for the newspapers about many fellow players in 1910, not only giving opinions about their playing, and giving first and last names, but also helping to piece together where many of the players were coming and going during the season of 1910. By 1910, Smith had joined the 8th Regiment of the Illinois National Guard and was stationed at Peoria, Illinois. Infielder
An infielder is a baseball player stationed at one of four defensive "infield" positions on the baseball field. Standard arrangement of positions In a game of baseball, two teams of nine players take turns playing offensive and defensive roles. Although there are many rules to baseball, in general the team playing offense tries to score runs by batting balls into the field that enable runners to make a complete circuit of the four bases. The team playing in the field tries to prevent runs by catching the ball before it hits the ground, by tagging runners with the ball while they are not touching a base, or by throwing the ball to first base before the batter who hit the ball can run from home plate to first base. Negro League Baseball
The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". In the late 19th century, the baseball color line developed in professional baseball, excluding African Americans from league play. In 1885, the Cuban Giants formed the first black professional baseball team. Chicago Giants
The Chicago Giants were a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois which played in the Negro leagues from 1910 to 1921. History The team was founded by Frank Leland after he and his partner, Rube Foster, split up the Leland Giants in 1910. Frank Leland's new club was sometimes also known as Leland's Chicago Giants, until a court injunction forced Frank Leland to stop using the name Leland Giants. A 1910 article about an upcoming game and parade, announced everyone would wear the team colors, "white and maroon." After Leland's death, November 14, 1914, the team came under the control of longtime player Charles "Joe" Green. In 1920, the Chicago Giants became a founding member of the Negro National League (NNL). They played as a travelling team, without a home field, and finished in last place in both 1920 and 1921.
