Sir James Whitehead, 1st Baronet
Sir James Whitehead, 1st Baronet DL (2 March 1834 – 20 October 1917) was a British merchant and Liberal Party politician. Early life Whitehead was born near Sedbergh, Yorkshire. He was educated at the grammar school in Appleby-in-Westmorland (which became the current Appleby Grammar School), and was apprenticed as a draper in Kendal. He made his way to Bradford and then London, and married Mercy Mildred Hinds in 1860. He established a business on Gresham Street and co-founded the business of John Barker & Company, Kensington, in 1870. Civic service Having made his fortune, he retired from business in 1881 and concentrated on civic service. He became Alderman for Cheap ward in the City of London in 1882. He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Fanmakers in 1884, served as Sheriff that year and was then elected Lord Mayor of London for 1888. James Beethom Whitehead
Sir James Beethom Whitehead (31 July 1858 – 19 September 1928) was a British diplomat, who was British Minister to Serbia 1906–1910. Early life Whitehead was the second son of the engineer Robert Whitehead (1823–1905) by his wife Frances Maria Johnson (1821–1883). His elder sister, Alice, married Georg Anton, Count of Hoyos, and was the mother of Countess Marguerite (wife of Herbert von Bismarck, eldest son of Otto von Bismarck) and Alexander, Count of Hoyos. His elder brother, John Whitehead, was the father of Agathe Whitehead (wife of Captain Georg von Trapp and mother of seven children who were the inspiration behind the movie ''The Sound of Music''), and his younger brother, Robert Boville Whitehead also married and had issue. He was educated in Austria and at St John's College, Cambridge, where he earned a B.A. degree in 1881 and an M.A. degree in 1887. Stephen James Whitehead (2 September 1860 – 9 June 1904) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Warwickshire between 1894 and 1900 and for Liverpool and District in 1891 and 1892. He was born in Enfield Highway, Middlesex and died at Small Heath, Birmingham. Cricket career Whitehead was a right-handed lower-order batsman and a right-arm bowler who could bowl both off-breaks and medium-pace. He was a professional cricketer and had playing and coaching engagements at Oxford, Malvern and Rugby at the time of his death, and was also playing for Stratford-on-Avon Cricket Club. He played for Warwickshire from 1886, but the county's matches were not regarded as first-class until 1894. James Whitehead (police Officer)
Brigadier James Whitehead CB CMG CBE DSO OStJ ADC (18 January 1880–1 December 1955) was a British Indian Army officer who later became a senior officer in the London Metropolitan Police. Whitehead was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Edmund Whitehead, an officer in the Black Watch. He was educated at Dulwich College and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned a second lieutenant into the Royal West Kent Regiment on 12 August 1899, but on 29 October 1901 transferred to the Indian Staff Corps in the Indian Army. He was promoted lieutenant on 12 November 1901 and Captain on 12 August 1908, by which time he was serving with the 1st Brahmans. In 1907 he married Winifred Fanny Fell; they had four sons and one daughter. He attended the Staff College from 1911 to 1912. James Whitehead (South African Cricketer)
James George Whitehead (June 1882 – 23 January 1940) was a South African cricketer who played first-class cricket for Warwickshire in a single match in 1902 and then for Western Province and Griqualand West from 1904–05 to 1920–21. He was born at Cape Town and died in the southern suburb of Mowbray. He was known, in English cricket at least, as "George Whitehead". Whitehead was a protege of Walter Richards, the old Warwickshire cricketer who coached in South Africa, and returned with Richards with a view to joining the Warwickshire staff when qualified through residence. He was described as "a left-handed medium-paced bowler homakes the ball get up very quickly from the pitch" and a left-handed "promising" batsman, and had played for the Cape Town Cricket Club. James Tillotson Whitehead (March 15, 1936 St. Louis, Missouri - August 16, 2003 Fayetteville, Arkansas) was an American poet and novelist. He published four books of poetry and one novel, ''Joiner''. Biography James Whitehead was born in St. Louis in 1936. He grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, where his family moved after World War II. Standing six foot 5 inches, and known as "Big Jim" he received a football scholarship at Vanderbilt University. However, a serious injury there dashed any hopes he had of a professional career. Instead, he focused on his studies, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy, then staying for a master's degree in English. He then went to the University of Iowa where he acquired an M.F.A. in creative writing. Whitehead then joined his college friend William Harrison in founding the creative writing program at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. James Whitehead (born 1942 in Augusta, Georgia) is a former Republican member of the Georgia State Senate. He was narrowly defeated in a June 2007 runoff election for the United States House of Representatives in Georgia's 10th congressional district's special election called to replace the late Representative Charlie Norwood. Personal life Whitehead attended Richmond County public schools, and graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1960. As a standout athlete, he earned All-American honors as a football tackle. He also set the Academy track team record for the shot put. Whitehead continued his athletic career as a Bulldog at the University of Georgia in Athens from 1960 to 1962 in football and track. He played as an offensive and defensive tackle with quarterback Fran Tarkenton and set a UGA shot put record which stood for six years.
