Jim Watson (Canadian Politician)
James Alexander Watson (born July 30, 1961) is a Canadian politician who served as the 59th mayor of Ottawa from 2010 to 2022. Previously, he served as an Ottawa city councillor from 1991 to 1997, and as mayor from 1997 to 2000. Watson subsequently represented the riding of Ottawa West—Nepean in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2010. He served in the Cabinet of Premier Dalton McGuinty in the portfolios of Consumer and Business Services (2003–2005), Health Promotion (2005–2007), and Municipal Affairs and Housing (2007–2010). He resigned in January 2010 to run for mayor in the 2010 Ottawa municipal election. He was re-elected mayor in 2014 and in 2018. On March 20, 2021, Watson became the longest serving mayor in the city's history, surpassing Stanley Lewis who held office from 1936 to 1948. Jimmy Watson (ice Hockey)
James Charles Watson (born August 19, 1952) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played ten seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Philadelphia Flyers. He was inducted into the Flyers' Hall of Fame February 2016. He played 2 games in the 1976 Canada Cup for Team Canada, which was arguably the greatest hockey team ever assembled. Playing career Watson was born in Smithers, British Columbia. He played with his older brother Joe for several seasons with the Flyers, winning the Stanley Cup together in 1974 and 1975. Post-playing career Watson currently coaches youth hockey for the Delco Phantoms Midget 18U-AA team. His previous team, the Philadelphia Little Flyers Midget 16U American AAA team won the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 AYHL Championships. James Douglas Watson (1943 – 13 February 2017) was a New Zealand biotechnologist and entrepreneur. Biography After growing up in Te Teko in the Bay of Plenty, Watson completed a Master of Science degree and then a PhD at the University of Auckland. He then moved to California, working at the Syntex Corporation, Palo Alto and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, and then to Department of Microbiology at the University of California. He returned to the University of Auckland as professor of microbiology. Notable students of Watson's include immunologist Graham Le Gros. In 1994, Watson established Genesis Research and Development, an NZX-listed, now defunct, biotechnology company based in Auckland.
