Jim O'Brien (Limerick Hurler)
James O'Brien (1945 – 19 August 2020) was an Irish hurler. At club level he played as a centre-back for Bruree and was the left corner-back on the Limerick senior hurling team that won the 1973 All-Ireland Championship. O'Brien's skill was recognised at an early age when he won a South Limerick school's medal with Bruree National School, before an unrewarding spell at Rathluirc CBS. His career at club level with Bruree spanned three decades. O'Brien won a Munster Championship medal with the Limerick minor hurling team in 1963, before being subsequently selected for the Limerick under-21 and junior teams. He made his first appearance for the Limerick senior hurling team during the 1966-67 National League and enjoyed his greatest successes as a defender over the following decade. Bruree () is a village in south-eastern County Limerick, Ireland, on the River Maigue. It takes its name from the nearby ancient royal fortress, the alternative name of which from the earliest times into the High Middle Ages was ''Dún Eochair Maigue'' or the "fortress on the brink of the maigue". GAA GPA All Stars Awards
The Gaelic Athletic Association-Gaelic Players' Association All Stars Awards (often known simply as the All Stars) are awarded annually to the best player in each of the 15 playing positions in Gaelic football and hurling. Additionally, one player in each code is selected as Player of the Year. The awards were instituted in 1971. Since 2011 they have been presented jointly by the Gaelic Athletic Association and the representative body for inter-county players, the Gaelic Players Association. Each player who receives a nomination is given a medallion marking the milestone. It is considered "the most coveted sporting award scheme in the country". The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. 1963 All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship
The 1963 All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship was the 33rd staging of the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1928. Kilkenny entered the championship as the defending champions in search of a fourth successive title, however, they were beaten by Wexford in the Leinster final. On 1 September 1963 Wexford won the championship following a 6-12 to 5-9 defeat of Limerick in the All-Ireland final. This was their first All-Ireland title. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league.
