Jim Ellis (baseball)
James Russell Ellis (born March 25, 1945 in Tulare, California) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played in 1967 and 1969 for the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. The , Ellis was originally signed by the Cubs as a free-agent in 1963, and he made his big league debut with them on August 11, 1967, at the age of 22. Although he allowed one run, three hits and two walks in the 2 innings he pitched in his big league debut earning the loss, his first big league at-bat was notable because he hit a double off an opposing pitcher Jim Bunning, driving in the Cubs only run of the game. Overall, Ellis went 1–1 with a 3.24 ERA in eight games (one started) in his first big league season. On April 23, 1968, Ellis was traded with Ted Savage to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Jim Hickman and Phil Regan. On October 21 of that year, he was traded to the Cardinals for Pete Mikkelsen. Jim Ellis (swimming Coach)
James Ellis (born 1948) is an American swim coach who founded the PDR (Philadelphia Department of Recreation, or Pride, Determination, Resilience) swim team in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He coached the team from 1971 to 2010. Ellis has been inducted to the International Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and received the President's Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The 2007 feature film ''Pride'' is based on his life story. Background Ellis grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Westinghouse High School of Pittsburgh Public Schools. His name is on the Westinghouse High School Wall of Fame. He swam competitively in high school, and at the collegiate level for Cheney State, where he also studied mathematics. James Tice Ellis (May 6, 1956June 28, 2001) was an American computer scientist best known as the co-creator of Usenet, along with Tom Truscott. Ellis was born in Nashville, Tennessee to Henry Ellis (an auditor and teacher) and Elsa Ellis. James Ellis grew up in Orlando, Florida. Before developing Usenet, Ellis attended Duke University. After graduating, Ellis worked for the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina in Research Triangle Park, N.C. He later worked as an Internet security consultant for Sun Microsystems. He was also Manager of Technical Development at CERT. He came up with the word ''Usenet''. Ellis and Truscott were awarded the 1995 USENIX Lifetime Achievement Award. Personal life and death Ellis and his wife, Carolyn, had two children. He died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, at his home in Harmony, Pennsylvania on June 28, 2001. He was 45. James Reed "Jim" Ellis (August 5, 1921–October 25, 2019) was a municipal bond lawyer and civic activist based in King County, Washington. Although he never sought or held elective office, at the time of his death the ''Seattle Times'' described him as "one of ashington'smost visionary and successful civic leaders." Among the many projects for which he was a key leader were cleaning up Lake Washington, establishing King County Metro (the county's public transit system), and a series of ballot initiatives known collectively as Forward Thrust; he also founded the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust.
