Jewish Museum Of Sweden
The Jewish Museum (in Swedish: Judiska Museet) in Stockholm, Sweden, is devoted to objects and environments related to Jewish religion, tradition, and history, particularly in connection to Judaism in Sweden. The Jewish Museum was founded by Viola and Aron Neuman in 1987, in an old rug warehouse in Frihamnen. In 1992, the museum moved from Frihamnen to Vasastan, Stockholm, Vasastan, where it was housed in a building at Hälsingegatan 2 that had been designed by Ragnar Östberg as a girls' school. In 2016 the museum moved once again, to new premises at Själagårdsgatan, Själagårdsgatan 19 in Gamla stan (Stockholm's "Old Town"), at the location of an 18th Century synagogue. During renovations of the new site, curators used diagrams from 1811 to uncover 19th-century murals that had been covered with several layers of paint. Själagårdsgatan
Själagårdsgatan (Swedish: "The Charitable Institution Street") is a street in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching south from Köpmangatan to Tyska Brunnsplan, it forms a parallel street to Baggensgatan. It crosses the small triangular square Brända Tomten and is intercepted by Kindstugatan, Tyska Skolgränd, and Svartmangatan. History The street, appearing as ''Siela gardz gatan'' in 1487, ''Sielegatenn'' in 1593, ''Siähl gårdz gatan'' in 1688, and ''Siärgårds Gatan'' 1718, is named after a charitable institution (''Själagård'', "Soul Building/Homestead") built on number 13 in the early 1420s. Gamla Stan
Gamla stan (, "The Old Town"), until 1980 officially Staden mellan broarna ("The Town between the Bridges"), is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Gamla stan consists primarily of the island Stadsholmen. Officially, but not colloquially, Gamla stan includes the surrounding islets Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen and Strömsborg. It has a population of approximately 3,000. Notable buildings, located in the old town, include, among others, the Bonde Palace, Stockholm Palace, Stockholm Stock Exchange Building and Tessin Palace. Ragnar Östberg
Ragnar Östberg (14 July 1866 – 5 February 1945) was a Swedish architect who is best known for designing Stockholm City Hall. Biography Östberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His parents were Carl Östberg and Erika Kindahl. Between 1884 and 1891, he first studied at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. In 1888, he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. He had an internship with architect Isak Gustaf Clason (1856–1930). In 1893 he visited the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and in 1896 he went on a three-year study trip to, among others, England, France, Italy and Greece. Dating from the early 1900s, he lived and worked in Umeå in northern Sweden. Scharinska villan in Umeå is considered one of Östberg's best works during his youth. Östberg became the most famous architect within the so-called "national romanticist" movement in Sweden. Vasastaden, or colloquially Vasastan, (Swedish for "Vasa town") is a 3.00 km2 large city district in central Stockholm, Sweden, being a part of Norrmalm borough.
