St Leonards-on-Sea
St Leonards-on-Sea (commonly known as St Leonards) is a town and seaside resort in the Borough of Hastings in East Sussex, England. It has been part of the borough since the late 19th century and lies to the west of central Hastings. The original part of the settlement was laid out in the early 19th century as a new town: a place of elegant houses designed for the well-off; it also included a central public garden, a hotel, an archery, assembly rooms and a church. Royal Photographic Society
The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, commonly known as the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), is one of the world's oldest photographic societies. It was founded in London, England, in 1853 as the Photographic Society of London with the objective of promoting the art and science of photography, and in 1853 received Monarchy of the United Kingdom, royal patronage from Queen Victoria and Albert, Prince Consort, Prince Albert. A change to the society's name to reflect the patronage was, however, not considered expedient at the time. In 1874, it was renamed the Photographic Society of Great Britain, and only from 1894 did it become known as the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, a title which it continues to use today. Alec Soth
Alec Soth (born 1969) is an American photographer, based in Minneapolis. Soth makes "large-scale American projects" featuring the midwestern United States. ''New York Times'' art critic Hilarie M. Sheets wrote that he has made a "photographic career out of finding chemistry with strangers" and photographs "loners and dreamers". Broomberg & Chanarin
Adam Broomberg (born 1970) and Oliver Chanarin (born 1971) are artists living and working in London. Together they have had numerous international exhibitions. Their work is represented in major public and private collections. They were awarded the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize for their book ''War Primer 2'', described as a "book that physically inhabits the pages of Bertolt Brecht's remarkable 1955 publication ''War Primer''." Simon Roberts (photographer)
Simon Roberts (born 5 February 1974) is a British photographer. His work deals with peoples' "relationship to landscape and notions of identity and belonging." Roberts' books include ''Motherland'' (2007), ''We English'' (2009), ''Pierdom'' (2013), and ''Merrie Albion'' (2017). His work has been exhibited internationally. The Royal Photographic Society has awarded him an Honorary Fellowship and its Vic Odden Award, and he was commissioned by the UK parliament Speaker's Advisory Committee on Works of Art as the official 2010 British Election Artist. Life and work Roberts studied a BA Hons in Human Geography at the University of Sheffield (1996). He currently lives in Brighton, England. Gillian Wearing CBE, RA (born 10 December 1963) is an English conceptual artist, one of the Young British Artists, and winner of the 1997 Turner Prize. ''The Guardian'' is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in 1821 as ''The Manchester Guardian'', and changed its name in 1959. Along with its sister papers ''The Observer'' and ''The Guardian Weekly'', ''The Guardian'' is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust. The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of ''The Guardian'' in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of ''The Guardian'' free from commercial or political interference". ''The Observer'' is a British newspaper published on Sundays. It is a sister paper to ''The Guardian'' and ''The Guardian Weekly'', whose parent company Guardian Media Group Limited acquired it in 1993. First published in 1791, it is the world's oldest Sunday newspaper. History Origins The first issue, published on 4 December 1791 by W.S. Bourne, was the world's first Sunday newspaper. Believing that the paper would be a means of wealth, Bourne instead soon found himself facing debts of nearly £1,600. Though early editions purported editorial independence, Bourne attempted to cut his losses and sell the title to the government. When this failed, Bourne's brother (a wealthy businessman) made an offer to the government, which also refused to buy the paper but agreed to subsidise it in return for influence over its editorial content. Joanna Piotrowska
Joanna Piotrowska (born 1985) is a Polish photographer based in London. She works primarily with black and white photography, focusing on themes of history, memory, and repetition. Education Piotrowska earned an MFA from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2013. Career Piotrowska's 2014 series "FROWST" is a series of staged family portraits. The photos were published in a book by the same name, which won the First Book Award in 2014. After winning one of the three Jerwood/Photoworks Awards in 2015, Piotrowska focused on photographing teenage girls in self-defense poses. She shot the series in Poland, finding subjects through friends and casting agencies that worked with aspiring actresses. In 2016, she began her "Frantic" series, in which she asked adults to construct homemade forts from their personal belongings. Impressions Gallery
Impressions Gallery is an independent contemporary photography gallery in Bradford, England. It was established in 1972 and located in York until moving to Bradford in 2007. Impressions Gallery also runs a photography bookshop, publishes its own books and sells prints. It is one of the oldest venues for contemporary photography in Europe. Operations Impressions Gallery is a charity, a not-for-profit organisation, funded by Arts Council England and Bradford Metropolitan District Council. Jerwood Space
Jerwood Space is an arts venue at Bankside on Union Street, Southwark, London. The facilities include rehearsal studios, gallery/exhibition space, meeting rooms, a café, etc. Exhibits include contemporary art and photography throughout the building. The formal foundation stone for the building was laid by Chris Smith, now Lord Smith of Finsbury, when he was Secretary of State for Culture. Pete Wilkinson has been Director since 2014.
