Jersey City Mayoral Special Election, 2004
The Jersey City, New Jersey, Jersey City 2004 mayoral special election took place on November 2, 2004. Democrat Jerramiah Healy won the election with 28% of the vote over his nearest rivals (Assemblyman Lou Manzo, 24%, and Acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith, 22%). The previous Mayor Glenn Cunningham (New Jersey), Glenn Cunningham, the first African-American Mayor died of a heart attack five months prior and L. Harvey Smith became Acting Mayor. The election was marked by attempts to claim the legacy of deceased Mayor Cunningham, innuendo, and a picture of the eventual winner drunk and naked on his front porch. Jerramiah Healy
Jerramiah T. Healy (born December 16, 1950) is a New Jersey-based politician who served as the 48th mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey serving from 2004 to 2013. He ran for the unexpired term of the late Glenn D. Cunningham and was elected in November 2004. In the special election, he defeated Acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith. He was subsequently elected to a full term by a record landslide. Healy entered public service as an assistant prosecutor for the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office in 1977. From 1981 to 1991, he maintained a private law practice in Jersey City. He was appointed Chief Judge in the Jersey City Municipal Court in 1991, and was reappointed in 1995. In 1997, he ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Jersey City against Bret Schundler, who later ran for Governor of New Jersey against Jim McGreevey. Louis Manzo
Louis Manzo (born February 28, 1955, in Jersey City, New Jersey) is an American Democratic Party politician who served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2004 to 2008, where he represented the 31st legislative district, and who ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey. Biography Manzo received a B.A. from Jersey City State College in health education. He began his career as a sanitarian with the Jersey City Health Division in 1977. Political career Manzo unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Jersey City five times in the following elections. In June 2007, he overwhelmingly lost a bid in the Democratic primary for a seat in the State Senate to Sandra Bolden Cunningham. 2009 race for Mayor of Jersey City In December 2008, Manzo announced that he would wage an uphill campaign for mayor of Jersey City against incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy. Glenn Cunningham (New Jersey)
Glenn Dale Cunningham (September 16, 1943 – May 25, 2004) was an American Democratic Party politician, who was the first African American Mayor of Jersey City, the state's second-largest city, winning the 2001 Jersey City mayoral election. Cunningham also served in the New Jersey Senate. After Cunningham's death, L. Harvey Smith became the acting mayor of Jersey City. In a November 2004 special election, Judge Jerramiah T. Healy was elected to complete the remainder of Cunningham's term. Joseph Doria was selected to fill Cunningham's Senate vacancy on an interim basis, and won a special election to fill the balance of the term.
