Jean Dubois the Elder, born at Fontainebleau in 1604, a landscape painter and painter to the king, succeeded in 1635 to the office of keeper of the pictures at Fontainebleau Fontainebleau (; ) is a commune in the metropolitan area of Paris, France. A court painter was an artist who painted for the members of a royal or princely family, sometimes on a fixed salary and on an exclusive basis where the artist was not supposed to undertake other work.
