Javier García (pole Vaulter)
Javier García Chico (born July 22, 1966 in Barcelona) is a retired Spanish pole vaulter, who won the bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain after beating Kory Tarpenning. Four years earlier in Seoul he was eliminated in the qualifying round. He competed in four consecutive Summer Olympics. His personal best jump was 5.75 metres, achieved in August 1990 in Sant Cugat. Athletics At The 1988 Summer Olympics – Men's Pole Vault
The men's pole vault at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea had an entry list of 21 competitors from 13 nations, with two qualifying groups (21 jumpers) before the final (15) took place on Wednesday September 28, 1988. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. Three Soviet, French and American athletes made the final, but it was the Soviet bloc that dominated the event, sweeping the medals, with Sergey Bubka already the dominant vaulter. His world record of 6.06 metres, set two months earlier, has only since been cleared by three other men, 2008 gold medalist Steven Hooker, 2012 gold medalist Renaud Lavillenie, and 2020 gold medalist Armand Duplantis in 2020. But while Bubka would vault in three more Olympics and would continue to dominate the World Championships with six consecutive wins, this would be the only Olympic medal he would achieve. These are the results of the 1988 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics which took place from 22 to 24 July 1988 at Estadio Olímpico in Mexico City, Mexico. Different versions of the sprint results were published, because the fully automatic electronic timing system was malfunctioning. The first version displayed below on the left hand side was officially used to determine the athletes qualifying for the finals (best times, q). Later, there was a second version (not displayed). In December 1988, British statistician Richard Hymans published a revised version for the IAAF and the ATFS where many times were corrected. These numbers are displayed below in parentheses. Finally, there were a couple of hand timing results (Heat 1, 110m hurdles men, Heat 1 and 2 200m women; also displayed below in parentheses), because the officials noticed a defect in the electronic timing system during the event.
